Thank you for attending our first of many Military PSA panel events, Anh(Ann) T. Taylor-Garcia! It was great meeting you and your husband, Quinton Taylor-Garcia, MBA. Also, thank you again for your service and sacrifice to our country. We love supporting our men and women in uniform and helping them achieve their next chapter of project success! ??
It's Thankful Thursday Yesterday, I had the privilege of participating in the PSA Panel: Transferring Military Skills into Civilian Career Success, moderated by Tanya Boyd, PMP?, PMI-ACP?. Thanks to Gregg D. Richie, PMP, Russell Parker, Cheryl Barnett, and Shane M. Dixon for sharing insights on transitioning from military project management to civilian careers. Although we come from different branches of the military, we share similar missions and experiences. Project management is something we practice throughout our military careers—whether it’s organizing a PCS move, managing day-to-day duties, or even personal tasks like house hunting or car shopping. However, translating these skills into civilian roles requires understanding how to frame them appropriately. Project management involves planning, organizing, and overseeing resources and tasks to meet goals within a defined timeframe and budget. Some of us also apply Agile methodologies in the military, where we focus on responsiveness to change and collaborative, high-quality results, in contrast to the more traditional, plan-driven approach of PMP. For military service members transitioning to civilian careers, the key to success is understanding how to communicate these skills in civilian terms, backed by certifications and work experience.
