Fun Fact Friday: Careers in Space! (Part 2) ?? It’s the end of World Space Week, and we’re shining a light on some incredible careers in the cosmos! Here’s what we found: ?? Astrobiology: Astrobiologists, like Lynn Rothschild, study the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. This interdisciplinary field involves searching for habitable environments in our Solar System and beyond, seeking evidence of prebiotic chemistry or life on bodies like Mars, Europa, and Titan, as well as exploring the early evolution and diversity of life on Earth. ?? Space Environmentalist: A space environmentalist examines the impact of space activities on the environment, both on Earth and in space, aiming for sustainable exploration and satellite operations. Director of NASA's Environmental Management Division (EMD), Charlotte Bertrand, supports this by managing practices and creating policies for compliance, pollution prevention, and resource conservation. ??? Space Architect: Space architects, like Michelle Munk, design elements of space projects, including robotic rovers, lunar and Mars bases, launch facilities, and habitats for extreme conditions. They support mission control and build on Earth architecture. Initially focused on engineering, the role of architects evolved to include designing space stations and planetary bases, with NASA leveraging expertise from crew systems and architecture students since the 1970s. What’s a unique space career you’ve heard of? Share in the comments! ?? #CareersinSpace #ProjectScientist #FunFactFriday #WorldSpaceWeek?

PIC OF THE WEEK: Our After-School STEAM Club students have been diving into hands-on projects that spark their creativity and teamwork! Can you guess what these brilliant girls are up to in the photo? . . . . Spoiler Alert: They are building a heart model to show how blood flows and learned that one of the heart's big jobs is to pump blood within our bodies. Over the past few weeks our girls across the country have been learning all about the heart and how to keep it healthy. Want to engage your young ones on the topic of heart health? Here's an idea for you try at home: Have a quick dance party ?? Before you start, have everyone measure their heart rate. Use a stopwatch to count beats per minute. Then put on your favorite songs and dance! After a few minutes, pause the music and measure your heart rate again. Try this with different types of music (slow, medium, and fast songs). Does your? heart rate change? Compare your results. What they will learn through this activity: When you move your body, like during a dance party, your heart pumps faster to send more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. This increases your heart rate. The more active you are, the more your heart works to keep up. Over time, regular physical activity strengthens your heart, making it more efficient at pumping blood even when you're resting. Fun Fact Friday: Careers in Space! (Part 1)?? Happy World Space Week! There are countless exciting careers in space, from engineers to scientists, all playing vital roles in our quest for knowledge beyond Earth. Here's a few we found: ???? Flight surgeons, like Moriah Thompson, manage health care and medical training for astronauts before, during, and after spaceflights. In the NASA Mission Control Center, they operate under the call sign ‘Surgeon’ and conduct weekly private medical conferences with the crew to address any health issues that arise. ??? Aerospace engineers, like Michelle Lynde, design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles, creating prototypes to ensure functionality. They coordinate manufacturing, assess project feasibility, evaluate safety and compliance, and develop quality standards. They also inspect malfunctioning products to identify and resolve issues. ?? Planetary scientists, like Karly Pitman, work to improve our understanding of the planets, satellites and smaller bodies in the solar system. By studying the atmospheres, surfaces and interiors of planets, researchers can get clues to the origins and mechanics of our own home planet. Studies focus on understanding planet origins, using radar to analyze asteroids, and identifying potential hazards. Research is conducted in labs, astronomical facilities, and via spacecraft and landers. What's a non-traditional career in space that you've heard of?
