The Renovation Wave is an EU initiative aiming to renovate 35 million buildings by 2030, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions across Europe. This plan focuses on upgrading both residential and public buildings, helping the EU reach its climate goals, creating green jobs, and cutting energy costs. ???? ReLIFE contributes by providing a centralized platform with essential building data and tailored services to support energy-efficient renovations across the EU. The European Commission has adopted its annual #WorkProgramme, which mentions the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector ?? https://buff.ly/4hTDDaV For most Europeans, energy policy is directly felt through their #HeatingAndCooling bills, which are often a source of economic concern. Heating can also affect people’s health adversely, if unclean heating sources such as coal or woody biomass are used. The coalition welcomes the Commission's focus on engaging communities and citizens in the transition to cleaner heating and cooling — #EnergyCommunities can quickly and significantly reduce energy costs, especially for low-income households. However, the unclear language in the work programme is a cause for concern, as the Commission states they "will explore methods to decarbonise Europe’s heating and cooling systems”. Existing clean renewable technologies are already well-suited for the task of decarbonising heating and cooling across the EU. Europe is a leader in #CleanHeat technologies which are all well-suited to the task of decarbonising heating and cooling: heat pumps, solar thermal and geothermal stations, and renewables-based district heating. The EU’s competitive leadership in the sector should be maintained and incentivised. We would strongly advise against costly and unrealistic solutions like CCS for methane, or hydrogen for heating – we simply don’t have the time or money for that. Instead, we call on the European Commission to produce, without delay, a holistic, forward-looking action plan for 2040 on how to address barriers to clean heating and cooling. Such a plan would bring the EU on course to end dependency on imported Russian fossil fuels — another stated aim of the Commission’s work plan — while protecting our climate.
