Before coming to Project Recovery I felt lost. I was trying to get sober once again. I was demoralized, tired of letting my family, my friends, and myself down. I wasn’t sure what to do but something had to change. If I knew one thing it was that continuing to stay stuck in self pity and the cycle of self destruction was not the answer. My sponsor let me sleep on his bedroom floor before going to a detox facility. After detoxing I then came to Project Recovery to begin a ten month journey. After Project Recovery I moved into a men’s sober living. Today I am now employed by that sober living as a house manager and have 15 months of sobriety. In addition to this employment, I will finally be finishing my bachelor’s degree in mathematics by the summer - after many starts and stops. Today I am free of the oppression that was my addiction. I am loved by a host of close friends who support my change and in return I try to help others realize that they too can recover, that they are not alone, and that they are worth the fight. #alumni #spotlight #recovery #sandiego #addiction #detox #miramesa #iop

Starting over isn’t failure. It’s your chance to build something better. ?? Change can transform your life. But many people fear it. 1?? Embrace New Beginnings: ? Starting over can lead to amazing opportunities. ? Where can I create a fresh start in my life or career? ? Identify one area—like a habit, routine, or project—to reset and try a new approach this week. 2?? Cultivate Adaptability: ? Being flexible helps you thrive in a fast-paced world. ? How do I typically respond when the unexpected happens? ? Seek out a new challenge—a course, project, or volunteer role—that forces you to adapt and think on your feet. 3?? Foster a Growth Mindset: ? See challenges as chances to learn and grow. ? Do I see hurdles as obstacles or opportunities? ? The next time you face a problem, write down three lessons you can learn from it—then act on at least one. 4?? Leverage Your Skills: ? Your past experiences can guide your new journey. ? Which past experience can I use to guide my new path? ? List your top three strengths and brainstorm how each can apply to a current goal or project. 5?? Encourage Team Innovation: ? Organizations that embrace change spark creativity and drive. ? How can I inspire my team to welcome new ideas? ? Host a quick brainstorming session where everyone shares one bold idea—no idea is off-limits. 6?? Reevaluate Strategies: ? Businesses must adapt to market shifts to stay relevant. ? Is my organization’s approach aligned with current market trends? ? Conduct a mini SWOT analysis with your team—pinpoint a potential shift you can act on right away. 7?? Overcome Fear of Change: ? Facing your fears can lead to personal and professional growth. ? What’s one risk I’ve been avoiding that could lead to growth? ? Take one small step toward that risk—reach out to a mentor, sign up for a new opportunity, or share your idea publicly. 8?? Reflect on Your Journey: ? Take time to think about where you’ve been and where you want to go. ? When I look back, what have been my biggest turning points? ? Block out 15 minutes to journal about your past milestones and how they’ve shaped your future goals. Reinvention is not just about starting fresh. It’s about the courage to take bold steps toward a better future. ?? Repost to encourage others who might be struggling to change. ?? I write posts like this every day at 9:30am EST. Follow me (Dr. Chris Mullen) so you don't miss the next one.

?? Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): A Path to Healing ?? In the late 1980s, psychologist Marsha M. Linehan introduced Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a compassionate response to the complexities of emotional suffering, particularly for those grappling with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Over the years, this transformative approach has evolved, offering hope and healing to individuals facing a variety of mental health challenges, including: 1. Borderline Personality Disorder 2. Bipolar Disorder 3. Eating Disorders 4. Substance Use Disorders 5. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder 6. Depression 7. Self-Harming Behaviors 8. Suicidal Ideation At its core, DBT is built on four essential components that guide individuals toward emotional balance and healthier relationships: ? Mindfulness: This practice encourages us to be present in the moment, observing our thoughts and feelings without judgment. It’s about cultivating awareness and learning to sit with our emotions rather than being overwhelmed by them. ? Distress Tolerance: Life can be challenging, and this component equips us with skills to manage distressing situations without resorting to harmful behaviors. Techniques like distraction and self-soothing become invaluable tools in our emotional toolkit. ? Emotion Regulation: Here, we learn to identify and navigate our emotions more effectively. Understanding the functions of our feelings helps us respond rather than react, fostering a sense of control over our emotional landscape. ? Interpersonal Effectiveness: Healthy relationships are vital for our well-being. This component focuses on enhancing communication skills, setting boundaries, and expressing needs assertively—skills that empower us to build meaningful connections. DBT shines particularly for those who struggle with emotional dysregulation and impulsive behaviors. It offers a structured yet compassionate framework for healing. However, it’s essential to remember that while DBT can be profoundly beneficial, it may not resonate with everyone; individual experiences vary based on personal circumstances and the therapist's expertise. ?? As we navigate our mental health journeys, let’s embrace self-compassion and recognize that healing is not linear—it’s a process filled with ups and downs. What’s one small act of self-compassion you’ve offered yourself today? If you found this insight helpful, consider saving it for later reflection or sharing it with someone who might benefit from feeling seen and supported. Follow me for ongoing compassionate insights into trauma-informed care and emotional well-being. Together, let’s foster understanding and healing in our lives! ?? #dbt #dbtcheatsheet #therapy #therapist #psychology #counselor #counseling #psychologist #community

Group activities at places like #seaworld play a vital role in #addictionrecovery by fostering connection, reducing stress, and promoting #mentalwellness . Engaging with nature and marine life provides a sense of awe and tranquility, helping individuals in #recovery develop healthy coping mechanisms. Shared experiences strengthen #sobersupport networks, reinforcing the importance of community in maintaining long-term sobriety. Activities like animal interactions and shows create positive memories, replacing past associations with substance use. These outings also encourage #MindfulLiving and physical activity, both crucial for #relapseprevention . Investing in fun, sober experiences helps build a fulfilling, substance-free life. #recoverycommunity #healingthroughnature

Seeking help for our mental health takes courage and strength. Openly discussing our mental health with someone else, even a doctor, comes with fear. But to me bravery is taking action despite fear, rather than the absence of it. For those in the workplace, fear can come about due to the perception, and sadly sometimes the reality of how you may be treated. If someone takes time off to grieve the loss of a close relative, or to fight a very serious illness, they are always welcomed back without question and often admired for their bravery. But in some workplaces many worry about how they will be treated and perceived when they return. Will the challenging projects go to others “to protect them from stress”?. Will leadership and advancement opportunities still be available to them. My message to every individual is to take the time to work on your mental health even if that requires time away from your role. Yes it takes honesty, vulnerability and even bravery, but investing in your own health always pays dividends. And remember if you are struggling with mental health challenges you can’t really be firing on all cylinders at work. So seeking help, working on yourself and improving your mental health will see you being much more productive at work. It is also important for leaders to remember that people do not return from working on their mental health as diminished in any way. They are strong, capable and will continue to deliver for you.
