Project Masam's Explosive Ordnance Risk Education campaigns' primary objective are to raise awareness about the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance – which contaminate Yemen - with a focus on ensuring the safety of every civilian. Seven years on, we continue to see major progress, resulting in positive behaviour and attitude change. #Yemen #ProjectMasam #MineAction #EORE #Landmines #ExplosiveOrdnance #Risk #Education #Awareness #MineFree

Brigadier General Antony Hayward, the United Nations Special Envoy’s Military Adviser for Yemen, has visited our headquarters in Marib governorate in north-central Yemen, accompanied by a UN delegation, where he met several project officials. During the meeting, Hayward emphasised Project Masam’s role, noting that it has played a vital part in protecting civilian lives and securing vast areas of Yemeni territory, despite the significant challenges posed by landmines. He also stressed the importance of continuing humanitarian landmine clearance initiatives to foster stability in Yemen and safeguard civilian lives. As we celebrate World Children's Day and the worldwide efforts made to help protect children's rights and create a brighter, more equitable future for the next generation, we also renew our promise to invest in the well-being and rights of every child through our work and everyday actions. In Yemen, the war has had and continues to have a huge impact on children's lives. Landmines?and unexploded ordnance have been the biggest killers of?children?in?Yemen since the beginning of the conflict. Humanitarian landmine clearance is essential to ensure no other children – or their families and friends – are injured or killed. Mine Action restores safety and security, and allows for children to access nutritious food and clean water, decent education, proper healthcare, and are safe from violence. #WorldChildrensDay #NotATarget #Yemen #Conflict #ChildrensRights #MineAction #Humanitarian #Landmines

Follow us as we kicked off our Explosive Ordnance Risk Education awareness campaign aimed at the students of the Kuwait School in the al-Suweida internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Marib Governorate; the strategic province in north-central Yemen. Al-Suweida camp is home to tens of thousands of Yemenis who have been displaced by Yemen's brutal war - and due to its key location, the area has been left littered with landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosive remnants of war following Houthis' withdrawal. #ProjectMasam #Yemen #war #Civilians #displaced #IDP #landmines #ExplosiveOrdnance #MineAction #EORE #Awareness #Risk #Education

Great to see Project Masam was mentioned in Markus Schindler's latest Mine Action Weekly newsletter - this time with regards to how our deminers cleared 636 Houthi landmines during the last week of October, and how we reported that civilians who had previously hoarded weapons, including landmines, are now surrendering them in significant numbers. In a new phenomenon, awareness campaigns have started to turn the tide in Yemen, where civilians hoarding weapons for personal gain are now handing over thousands of landmines to Project Masam. In an article published by Medium, we looked at how the economic deterioration and social needs in Yemen pushed families (at times with young toddlers) to gather and stockpile deadly landmines in their homes with the aim to sell them for a few dollars, or extract TNT or chemicals for other uses. Project Masam deminers, who have visited households across western and southern Yemen to retrieve stockpiled Houthi landmines, explained the explosive devices were found hoarded “in kitchens, sleeping places, and in courtyards”, which “increases the risk of their unintentional use”. Since 2023, however, our demining teams started recording an increase in the reporting of hoarded mines and their handover - tangible results of our Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions, as Yemeni society’s understanding of the dangers of these weapons slowly shifts. https://lnkd.in/erWJwcKX #Yemen #Economic #Crisis #Civilians #Stockpiles #Weapons #landmines #ExplosiveOrdnance #EORE #MineAction #ProjectMasam #Awareness
