Big thanks to everyone who attended the SELWC AIA San Diego and AIA Palomar Tour last Thursday, just ahead of the holiday season (Happy Thanksgiving in advance!). It was a pleasure to share this Award-winning project with you. This project is especially dear to my heart, as I have been involved from the very beginning—starting with the initial planning stages after winning the competition in 2019, through visualization and documentation, and now seeing it come to life. We’re deeply grateful to the County of San Diego —an incredible client—for accompanying us and allowing access to this facility and providing a space for today’s discussion. Huge thank you to Brian C. PCL Construction, our design-build partners, for their outstanding collaboration on this successful project. And Valerie Freier at Project Management Advisors, Inc. Most importantly, this project was shaped by the local community. Through outreach programs, we ensured their participation from start to finish, creating a space that truly belongs to and serves them. Knowing that this facility will become a modern hub for the community has been incredibly rewarding for all of us involved. The South East Live Well Center (SELWC) demonstrates how civic architecture can move beyond functionality to become a beacon of hope and connection. Our design was guided by trauma-informed principles, with the aim of creating a supportive, welcoming environment. This project has the unique ability to be the first point of contact to many people in need to cultivate safety, connection, and healing. Simon Ha Housing Solutions, in collaboration with Project Management Advisors, Inc. , has been contracted to represent the Downtown Women's Center Campus Expansion in the heart of Skid Row as the owner's representative. The project includes 98 units—97 designated as permanent supportive housing and one as a manager's unit—within a seven-story Type III podium construction featuring one level of subterranean parking. This expansion will increase the number of DWC-operated units in Downtown Los Angeles from 119 to 216, further enhancing their ability to leverage existing housing, wellness, and employment programs to provide comprehensive wraparound supportive services for women experiencing homelessness. Monday, I had the honor to participate in an annual architecture firm crawl in Chicago through Illinois School of Architecture’s Society for Business and Management in Architecture (SBMA) organization for the fourth consecutive year! We visited HDR, Kahler Slater, Project Management Advisors, Inc., & Norcon, Inc. Thanks to Illinois alums, Lily Johnston, Lukas Elisha, Tasmia Kamal, Assoc. AIA, Hazyel Burciaga, Autumn Chung, Jillian Armstrong & Kylee Korando for talking to us & giving us a tour at HDR - Chicago. It was great great to catch up with some of my former peers and see HDR’s new Chicago office! Thanks to Lorraine Kasznia, AIA, Megan Kaczinski, & Danielle Jamieson for giving us a presentation & tour of Kahler Slater’s new office! I really enjoyed learning more about the different sectors within your firm! Thanks to Eric Gould & Alyssa Krause for answering our questions about what a day in the life looks like as a project manager at Project Management Advisors, Inc. - Chicago. Lastly, thanks to Owen Glennon, LEED AP, (one of the former SBMA presidents!) & Benjamin Crocker for talking to us about the exciting work Norcon has done. The office renovation over the years was cool to see and the view of the skyline was spectacular! A well-deserved thanks goes to SBMA’s president, Emily Mair, for setting up this year’s firm crawl! It was great to interact with so many Illinois School of Architecture alumn and I am glad to now be a part of such a diverse network of Illinois alumna! Monday reaffirmed that staying at Illinois to continue my education was the best choice for me! I-L-L

With a 2030 deadline looming, hospitals face costly upgrades or closure, but many lack the funds that are needed to comply. Retrofitting disrupts care and diverts resources from improving patient outcomes, he says. I recently had the opportunity to be part of a Lunch and Learn at the Stevens Institute of Technology career center with Steve Dutra, Jerry Maffia, and Tracey Edwards, PHR. We gave a Project Management Advisors, Inc. crash course highlighting our company culture, project experience, and summer internship program. The discussion centered around how AI and data collection can facilitate smoother healthcare operations and help to future-proof facilities as technology advances.
