Friday was a big day for Project Kitty Hawk and our partners North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University. The first graduates earned bachelor’s degrees from PKH-powered degree programs (now called “Flight Path” Programs). These graduates’ stories are emblematic of the hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians who are in search of educational opportunity that meets their needs and busy schedules. More than 550 students are now enrolled in 11 degree programs specifically designed for working adults across three UNC System institutions. These online degree programs, offered at North Carolina Central University, East Carolina University, and Appalachian State University, were designed and launched in partnership with Project Kitty Hawk, an affiliated entity of the UNC System that offers education technology services to help institutions attract and serve working adults. “To see 558 students enrolled in PKH-powered programs just under a year after the first program launched is a testament to the vision and hard work of the teams at NC Central, ECU, App State, and Project Kitty Hawk,” said Peter Hans, president of the UNC System. “I’ve repeatedly said that it is our moral obligation to better serve adult learners. Dr. Yolanda VanRiel is the department chair of Nursing at North Carolina Central University and has 25 years of nursing experience and 20 years of experience as a nurse educator. She recently wrote a piece for Medical Economics about how virtual nursing can help address nursing shortage challenges.? ? This week, Appalachian State University welcomed the first cohort of students into PKH-powered degree programs! Students are now taking courses within two programs, Health Care Management and Supply Chain Management. In addition to our PKH-powered degree programs, Project Kitty Hawk offers a system-wide approach to re-enrolling learners who have stopped out of UNC System institutions. In just a little over a year, the PKH Re-Enrollment Program has brought more than 1,700 students back into UNC System institutions, and some of the smallest schools in our state are seeing the largest impacts.? ? “Our partnership with PKH has proven to be invaluable for UNCP, greatly enhancing our efforts to re-engage students and support them as they return to achieve their goals,” said Dr. Robin Cummings, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. “Whether they are simply re-enrolling to finish what they started or seeking new opportunities in life, it is incredibly rewarding to see the project’s positive impact for so many individuals.
