As part of the UN Millennium Fellowship, our project Ekatha Unnati focused on SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, with a mission to empower the Kani community, an Indigenous community in Kerala. Ekatha Unnati, meaning unity and progress, became a journey of advocacy, education, and social justice. We visited settlements in Amboori and Kottur, conducting legal awareness sessions, health workshops, and book donations. Our engagement with the Moopan, the community leader, gave us invaluable insights into their culture and challenges. Collaboration with local leaders and Geethanjali NGO was key to adopting a holistic approach for sustainable change. This journey strengthened our leadership, coordination, and empathy as we worked towards lasting empowerment. Our commitment to Ekatha Unnati continues beyond the fellowship, driven by the hope of true equality for every member of the Kani community. This video captures the essence of our work—a heartfelt reflection of our efforts, challenges, and the hope we carry forward.? ???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????? From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine warmth and open-hearted smiles. We came bearing gifts for the children at the LP school and anganwadi—reading books, coloring books, and crayons—to encourage their passion for learning and creativity. Watching their faces light up reminded us how small gestures can inspire lasting joy and curiosity. Our visit included a hands-on session on hand hygiene with the school children, where we shared simple, essential practices for staying healthy. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn were truly encouraging, as they engaged actively and asked thoughtful questions. One of the most memorable parts of our day was sitting with Amburi Mupan, a respected elder and leader within the Kani community. Through his stories, we gained a deeper understanding of the community’s rich heritage, unique traditions, and the challenges they navigate today. His wisdom left a lasting impression, fostering a deeper appreciation for the Kani way of life. This experience reaffirmed the power of human connection. By coming together, we celebrate diversity, uplift communities, and create meaningful change. Here’s to the journey of learning, understanding, and building together.
