PPI attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week, where we were proud to host numerous events throughout the week, including a policy forum with elected leaders, a reception and watch party, and a two-part "Winning the Working Class" event with Axios. Our afternoon of policy programming centered around our Campaign for Working America, recently launched by?former Rep. Tim Ryan, which is developing a new Blueprint of policy ideas oriented around the economic aspirations and moral concerns of working families. During panels and fireside chats with elected leaders, we discussed a policy framework to address what we see as the Democratic Party’s overriding political imperative: Regaining the allegiance of working-class Americans. Yesterday, PPI hosted an event reflecting on the sobering 2024 election results and what Democrats should prioritize moving forward. PPI President Will Marshall hosted a fireside chat with Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) to discuss what message working-class voters delivered in this election and how party leaders should respond as they look ahead. The event additionally featured a presentation by Deborah Mattinson, former head of strategy for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with insights from post-election swing-state focus groups, as well as from John Ray with initial takeaways from new PPI/YouGov polling on working-class swing-state voters. This conversation, which also included PPI’s Claire Ainsley and AEI’s Ruy Teixeira, centered around analyzing the difficult lessons Democrats learned and how the center-left can best position itself for future elections.

So thankful to share the stage with Congressman Kendrick Meek , Mayor Michael A. Nutter , and AABE President Ralph Cleveland, and for the opportunity to share with the National League of Cities the work of Progressive Policy Institute and Elan Sykes on the energy burdens that communities are being asked to bear in the important transition to a lower carbon future.
