The Boston HUB partnered with Massachusetts Professionals of Color in the Environment (POCIE) and hosted another tatreez (Palestinian embroidery) workshop led by Roba Khorshid, learned about environmental justice issues in Palestine from the amazing nonprofit 1 for 3 Palestine, and about the long history of Black and Palestinian solidarity from Harvard Afro! There was also a silent auction and fundraiser for 1for3 featuring the work of amazing local artists (see last photo for their instagram info !). $645 were raised to support 1for3's work upholding Palestinian human rights around education, healthcare, and the environment. Thank you to everyone who participated, donated to 1for3, and Andala Coffee House for hosting this spectacular event!

  • POCIE will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 23rd until Monday, January 6th.?Our intention for this extended break is to center?rest as an act?of?rebellion?against dominant systems of capitalism and white supremacy, which allows us to show up in more impactful ways. With that said, we are also thrilled to share three exciting events and new partnerships coming after the New Year: Our member meetings throughout 2025 will be focused on a central theme: Land and Liberation movements. Our first guest will be Chris Carr, Co-Founder of?Black Land Ownership, who will be joining us to discuss historical and contemporary land dispossession and segregation of Black communities in the US, and Black Land Ownership as a counterforce to these systemic forms of oppression. Next, POCIE and the?Dorchester Food Co-op?will collaborate for an art build and introductory conversation on Food Sovereignty. We will be talking about basic food sovereignty concepts, while drawing and mapping our food chain, and imagining regenerative food webs and what it might take to weave them together through art. This conversation precedes a Food Sovereignty Panel with four local experts in March 2025! Finally, POCIE and?Black Girl Environmentalist?are holding a Tatreez (traditional Palestinian embroidery) workshop where we will hear about the history and significance of Tatreez, learn about environmental justice issues in Palestine, and hear a presentation on the history of Black and Palestinian solidarity from the?Boston Liberation Center?and?Harvard AFRO. Finally, a silent auction with art from local artists will be held to fundraise for?1for3, a Boston-based organization working?on environmental justice for Palestinian refugees in the West Bank. Please contact us for registration information for these events!

  • We are thrilled to announce that we have been selected as grant recipients for the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation's (MOOR) Inclusive and Accessible Outdoor Recreation Events Grant Program! Historically, BIPOC folks have been barred from outdoor recreation and green spaces, and thus don’t have the same opportunity to develop the skills needed to pursue outdoor recreation independently. This event specifically aims to target this knowledge and skill gap by providing a free, guided opportunity to learn and experience a variety of outdoor recreation activities including: canoeing, bird watching and ID, plant identification, mushroom identification, natural history of the landscape from an indigenous perspective, and more. Thanks again to MOOR and Paul Jahnige for supporting us in this work! #BIPOCOutdoors #nature #outdoorrecreation

Yesterday, I had an exciting day at the NEARC Fall Conference in Burlington, Vermont! ??????????? During the conference, I: ? Engaged with insightful talks on GeoAI and Image Identification, ArcGIS’s Network Analyst, and visualizing Massachusetts FEMA Flood Maps alongside MC-FRM’s Coastal Flood Models. ? Participated in hands-on workshops on Arcade and ModelBuilder in ArcGIS Pro. I also had the opportunity to bring a poster, "Salt Marsh Adaptation to Sea Level Rise in the Lower Cape Cod Region: Finding Potential Conservation Sites for Resiliency,” a project from my POCIE internship at Woods Hole Group. In this project, I calculated and analyzed salt marsh areas projected to be lost, maintained, or gained by 2070 in Lower Cape Cod based on 1m sea level rise scenario SLAMM data outputs. I utilized various GIS techniques, including Reclassify and Cell Statistics, and proposed conservation strategies for three key sites in Harwich, Chatham, and Orleans. Grateful for the chance to connect and learn in such a vibrant community! Special thanks to John Russell and Brittany Hoffnagle, WEDG for making this experience possible for me and to Nasser Brahim and Annie O'Connell for their support while working on the project!

These past few months have been an amazing journey at BSC Group! From day one, I've been amazed by the depth of knowledge and creativity flowing through every project and conversation. I want to especially recognize Pallavi Kalia Mande, Casey-Lee Bastien, Catarina Martinez, and Eric Joseph, RLA, ASLA – your mentorship has been invaluable. You've each shared insights that I know will shape my professional path for years to come. I'm also deeply grateful to John Russell and Professionals of Color in the Environment (POCIE) for their exceptional support and commitment to advancing diversity in the environmental field. Your work in creating opportunities for people of color is truly transformative and essential for building a more inclusive industry. To the entire BSC family: thank you for creating such a collaborative and engaging environment where interns truly feel like part of the team. The commitment to both excellence and equity here has been inspiring to witness and be part of. With this internship coming to a close, I'm excited to put everything I've learned into practice and share the knowledge I have learned with others. BSC Group has set the bar high for what a supportive and dynamic workplace should be, and I'm genuinely grateful for this opportunity to learn and grow with you all!

  • We loved collaborating with Boston Harbor Women of Color Coalition for this incredible event on Peddocks Island!

This summer, I had the honor of helping plan and execute two major events on two different Boston Harbor Islands! Having never visited any of the islands before, I was thrilled to take on this task with Boston Harbor Women of Color Coalition. The Annual Retreat at Cathleen Stone Island was a heartwarming and inspiring gathering, where I connected with around 70 women of color in Boston's green and blue spaces. We unveiled our strategic plan for the coming years and are now actively working to implement it, pushing the coalition to new heights. Last month, the coalition hosted its first-ever collaboration with Professionals of Color in the Environment (POCIE). Together, we held a unique professional development event on Peddocks Island, redefining what networking and career growth can look like—fun, educational, and far from daunting, like exploring an island! Huge shoutout to Joye Williams and Maya Smith for being such a blast to work with, I'm excited to continue working with BHWOCC and contribute to its growth!
