Day 5 of the Production and Manufacturing Institute was welding day! Special thanks to Matt (Wemco Inc), Erik White (Metals Fabrication Company), Tyler (Kaiser Aluminum), Kyle Harrison P.E., CWI, CWEng(Wemco Inc), Shane Elmose (Wagstaff, Inc.), Owen Ordorff (Wagstaff), Micah Wilson (Wagstaff), Justin Sinn (East Valley School District ... not pictured) and Nate Zschoche of my intern team (not pictured) who helped with the Welding Day at the Production and Manufacturing Institute. Also pictured is Stephen McPoland (MacKay Manufacturing) who is one of our lead instructors for the program. Together, they are helped the students with an incredible experience. Most never touched a mig welder before. By the end, they welded metal cube dice. Cool "show and tell" at the end of the day. We don't just talk about manufacturing. This year every participant at our East Valley location an introduction to CAD! Our mentor Nate Zschoche taught them all how to model a key chain a with writing on it and they were able to customize it however they liked! We then printed them and handed them our to students! This year participants also got tour Kaiser Aluminum! This is only the second year that we have bee able to tour and we are so grateful to everyone who helped show us around! Students got to go through the plant and see most of the machines in action as well as learn a little more background about Kaiser Aluminum and job opportunities straight out of college! Students toured so many manufacturing businesses this year! They went to both Collins Aerospace and Pearson Packaging in one day! Both were different from what participants had seen before, and gave them even more insight into just how many different careers there are under the title "manufacturing"! Day 3 of the Institute we visited SCC and participants got to experience machining! They made flag trinkets this year, and everyone got start a metal piece in a machine and polish it when it was done! They also had a mini lesson on the CAD software that SCC uses, which is MasterCAM. The first week of the Institute was wonderful!! Participants got to tour MacKay Manufacturing, Wagstaff Inc, and experience machining at SCC! (later post to come) They had a couple of challenges when they built birdhouses and made birdhouse kits, but everyone enjoyed the first week overall!
