There’s been a surge of inquiries regarding the recent CrowdStrike disruption, which many have mistakenly attributed to Microsoft. In reality, CrowdStrike, not Microsoft, rolled out a software update that hadn’t undergone thorough testing on Windows. This led to a system crash. Standard applications don’t have the capacity to cause such a crash in Windows. However, CrowdStrike operates at a privileged level due to its role as security software, which gives it the potential to crash Windows. So, what could have been done differently? Clearly, the testing process was insufficient and needs enhancement. Drawing from our experience in constructing the shared SaaS infrastructure for the retail sector (GlobalNetXchange), we’ve learned that phased deployments are crucial for risk reduction. Distributing updates to the entire world simultaneously isn’t advisable. If a single sector had encountered an issue, CrowdStrike could have retracted the update, rectified the issue, and minimized the impact. It’s important to remember that even the most rigorous testing program isn’t immune to bugs. Being aware of this and taking steps to limit potential damage is a wise strategy.
