A climate literacy initiative that makes practical tools and educational resources available to everyone, everywhere.
关于我们
Probable Futures is a non-profit climate literacy initiative that makes practical tools, stories, and resources available online to everyone, everywhere. We offer educational materials, data tools, and thought leadership resources to empower individuals, organizations, and governments to prepare for the futures that are likely, and work to avoid the ones that carry the most profound risks for our world. We were founded in 2020 by a group of concerned leaders and citizens who started asking climate scientists direct, practical questions about what climate change would be like in different places around the world. Together with the Woodwell Climate Research Center, we built an online resource that makes the best available climate science actionable.

Happy vernal equinox! We’re reflecting on the change in season with Spencer Glendon’s new essay making the case for humble businesses and picnics:

?Last week Alison Smart and Nabig Chaudhry had the opportunity to discuss climate stability and adaptation with the Masters in Management students at London Business School. We’re glad to hear Xia Li’s feedback below—thank you for having us!
How can companies truly integrate sustainability and climate change into their strategy—especially in today’s uncertain world? This week in my?MiM Strategy class at London Business School, we had the privilege of exploring this question with two incredible guest speaker sessions. On Tuesday, Andrew Jackson, Europe, Middle East & Africa Industry Lead of ERM, delivered powerful insights on the opportunities and challenges major tech firms face in adopting sustainable practices, alongside the critical role of AI in energy consumption and climate change. Andrew and I go way back—he was my boss when he was CEO of Asia Pacific, and I still remember when we worked on the?climate change mitigation study for the HKSAR government?15 years ago. It’s inspiring to see how the conversation has evolved! Then on Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Alison Smart and Nabig Chaudhry from Probable Futures, who sparked an engaging discussion on the?physical?impacts?of climate change on businesses and society. They also showcased an innovative tool to evaluate climate change effects on assets across various scenarios. A heartfelt thank you to our speakers for their expertise and inspiration—fueling the next generation of leaders at London Business School!

We couldn't agree more...
When maps come out, so do stories. And stories help us better understand our place in a changing world. Woodwell Climate cartographers use maps to propel climate science for solutions. Greg Fiske and Christina Shintani show that the act of creating maps is not just an end product, but a critical step in the scientific process. A modern cartographer, according to Fiske, is a data analyst, a statistician, a designer, a programmer, a storyteller, and an artist rolled into one. We’re proud to have them on our team. “Public health and climate intersect, and they’re inextricable.” Read how data scientist Jonathan Gilmour and data quality lead Michal Mart found primers on climate change for themselves and high-quality data to support pubic health work.

“The Dodge Aries K-car was not a car that people loved. I was the beneficiary of this combination of pride and cheapness when my grandmother gave the K-car to me to drive during my final year of high school. All of a sudden, I could participate in life in ways that were previously impossible. I was grateful for the mobility. Later I became grateful for the lessons about quality this car taught me.” There are lessons to be learned about climate maintenance and repair from hand-me-down cars. Each solstice and equinox Spencer Glendon writes about the intersection of climate and culture. Read his letter on quality, maintenance, and repair here: https://buff.ly/3NdF5Hr

“You can learn this stuff. It's tractable, interesting, and useful.” Take Spencer Glendon’s recommendation and go read A tour of drought in our climate handbook: https://lnkd.in/eKNWcYVr
I was glad to chip in to this HBS Working Knowledge https://lnkd.in/eNF_XAbF piece about insurance and climate change after the LA wildfires. John Macomber, Peter Tufano, Ishita Sen, and Jim Matheson offer useful, interesting perspectives that I recommend. I want to emphasize that markets are uncaring and inefficient teachers. In theory, people could learn about climate hazards from market signals like higher insurance premiums or from the aftermath of disasters, but we will all fare much better if we learn how our climate works, is changing, and what risks we face. I strongly recommend people check out the Tour of Drought https://lnkd.in/eNF_XAbF on the Probable Futures website https://lnkd.in/eAJffdJY . You can learn this stuff. It's tractable, interesting, and useful.
