Reinsurance is NOT the same and, in certain instances, the product "de jure" the "Big Box" competitors bring to market, may expose a Dealer to the hazards Jeff speaks of in his post. Many of the Dealer community, and even some CPA's and Attorneys can miss these critical details. Audits of reinsurance companies are increasing yet nobody wants to talk about compliance... Reasons for concern: — Your reserve accounts aren't managed in like with the admin's investment policy statement (I see this weekly) — One of your reinsurable products has a 0% loss ratio (You're an easy IRS target for tax avoidance/lack of insurable risk) — Your reinsurance company structure raises control group issues (time to ask hard questions of your agent/admin) — Your DOWC is out of NOLs and now you're absolving yourself of tax liability by making an 831(b) election These are just a sampling of the issues we're seeing percolate for dealers
