    State privacy laws are advancing—but financial data is left behind. The CFPB’s new report raises serious concerns on financial data privacy. Financial companies collect and use sensitive consumer data daily. What kind of data is collected? - Financial institutions gather spending, income, and location data. - They track purchases, account balances, - and even browsing habits. - This data is sometimes sold or shared with third parties. State privacy laws leave financial data out: - Many state laws protect consumer data in other industries. - But financial institutions are often exempt from these protections. - This means financial data is less protected than other data types. Why does this matter? - Consumers care deeply about the privacy of their financial data. - In surveys, most people want full control over shared bank data. - Yet, current laws don’t give consumers meaningful choice. - Many don’t realize how their data is being collected or used. What risks does the report highlight? - Financial data misuse can lead to scams and dark patterns. - Predators use data to manipulate or target vulnerable consumers. - Mass data collection can result in unfair pricing or discrimination. - Some financial firms build revenue models around selling data. What does the report recommend? - The report calls attention to state law exemptions. - It suggests states reconsider how financial data is protected. - States could expand protections to include financial institutions. - This would give financial data the same safeguards as other data. The report is a call to protect sensitive financial information.
