Among the many crucial topics he addressed, his emphasised the need of a strong cooperation at the European level. The Supervisor highlighted the essential work carried out within the European Data Protection Board and the broader collaboration among Data Protection Authorities, especially in cross-border cases, and in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. On AI, he underscored the Council of Europe Convention on AI, which aims to align technological progress with fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law, while setting common standards for responsible AI use. In his speech, he focused on the complexities of global AI governance and its impact on data protection. "Recent global developments highlight the urgent need for robust regulatory frameworks to address the challenges posed by rapid AI advancement. The evolving geopolitical landscape adds further complexity to data protection risks. Ensuring lawful data collection, enhancing dataset quality, promoting AI transparency, and preventing discriminatory outcomes are critical goals. These objectives are essential for fostering trust and ensuring that AI benefits society equitably." He added - "The European Union plays a pivotal role in defending fundamental rights and promoting ethical AI development. The AI Act, alongside the GDPR, provides a strong framework to achieve these goals. Reflections on the "State of AI" Conference: Shaping the Future of Artificial Intelligence I had the privilege of attending an insightful closed-door event on the "State of AI" at the magnificent Tempio di Adriano in Rome, a historic venue that provided a striking backdrop for discussions about our technological future. This high-level conference, held under Chatham House Rules, brought together an impressive array of global leaders in AI policy, regulation, and innovation to discuss the current landscape and future directions of artificial intelligence. Key takeaways from the event: ?? The rapid pace of AI technological developments is both exciting and challenging, requiring adaptive strategies from policymakers and industry leaders. ?? AI presents enormous opportunities across sectors, but also brings significant risks and challenges that need careful consideration. ?? The development of AI regulatory frameworks is a complex, evolving process that requires balancing innovation with safety and ethical concerns. ?? There's a growing need for international cooperation and convergence towards a common global AI strategy. ?? Collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and civil society is crucial in finding practical solutions to AI challenges. While I can't disclose specific opinions or details due to the Chatham House Rules, the depth of expertise and diversity of perspectives shared were truly remarkable. The event featured high-level representatives from the European AI Office, OECD AI Observatory, US Departments of Justice and Commerce, European data protection authorities, including the The Italian Data Protection Authority, European Parliament, as well as leaders from tech companies and distinguished academics. As a natural continuation of digital transformation, artificial intelligence impacts all sectors of society. The fast evolution of technology and AI applications has triggered many countries to adopt new regulations. Striking the right balance between safeguarding fundamental individual rights and allowing society and the economy to harness the full potential of AI is a complex endeavour.? ? ?? The State of AI gathered authorities and experts from several continents to delve into:? - Technology developments – what's next?? - AI opportunities? - Identified AI risks and challenges? - AI regulatory framework developments?? - Overcoming the international dilemma: convergence towards a common international AI strategy? - Good practices in terms of regulatory and technological approaches? ? After a series of sessions with senior authorities and experts, the participants gathered in working groups to discuss and address the identified challenges and opportunities.
