The Texas Attorney General’s office recently secured a record $1.4 billion settlement with Meta over alleged nonconsensual biometric data use. Additionally, the state has filed a lawsuit against GM for allegedly selling driving data without consumer consent.?? If you hear me talking about PETs adoption, you may think it’s about the cute foster dog my family recently brought home. But I'm actually talking about Privacy Enhancing Technologies.?? ?? PETs include a broad range of technologies used to protect personal data; examples range from access controls to homomorphic encryption to differential privacy.? ?? Recently an article was published by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office on barriers to PETs adoption and recommendations on how to overcome them.? Barriers include limited awareness of PETs and a lack of technical expertise and resources. One of the critical themes in the recommendations is better collaboration and engagement between technologists and data suppliers.?? ??
