Millions of families and children throughout the country are punished emotionally and financially by a loved one’s incarceration. The stress of having a loved one inside cannot be understated, particularly given the poor conditions in prisons and jails and the difficulty of holding administration accountable for the neglect and violence behind the wall. In addition to the emotional toll, families have to shoulder the cost of supporting a loved one inside—from fines and fees associated with their case to phone calls and commissary—on top of their household expenses.

For World Hearing Day, we wanted to highlight the injustice that people with disabilities experience in the criminal legal system. From hearing to vision-related disabilities, incarcerated people have much higher rates of disability compared to the general U.S. adult population. Communities across the country have been told that investing in new jail construction is the only way to solve old policy problems, but arguments for new jails can leave them with buyer’s remorse. The criminalization of kids has horrific effects on us all. When children are funneled into the criminal legal system, it takes a toll on them for life. It's more important now than ever that we support & uplift youth –?not imprison them. Last month, the Nation's Report Card revealed concerning trends in how children are performing in school, and it comes at a time when the Department of Education is under attack. It's no doubt that the US would be better off investing in education rather than youth incarceration. #incarceration #criminaljustice #education #data
