In this week’s episode of The Campaign Strategist, Melissa Waage drops this gem: "The question is: What do those targets need to move in our direction and make the decision we want them to make? And that is how strategy is born. The more you can figure that out before you launch a campaign, the better." So simple, so smart — and so often overlooked. Check out this clip, then listen to the full conversation (link in the comments) for more hard-earned wisdom on campaign strategy, leadership, and keeping people engaged for the long haul. #advocacy #strategy #campaigns #leadership #TheCampaignStrategist

This week on The Campaign Strategist, I had the joy of talking with the wonderful Melissa Waage — a brilliant campaigner, long-time environmental advocate, and now VP of Advocacy & Engagement at Sandy Hook Promise. We dig into campaign strategy fundamentals, what it really takes to move decision-makers, why preparation and storytelling matter so much, and how to keep people engaged even through long, hard fights (looking at you, Inflation Reduction Act!). Plus, Melissa shares the best piece of advice she ever got and why self-care matters for campaigners. 5 Ways Enviros and Progressives Must Adapt Communications Adapting to change is tough and uncomfortable, and people and organizations often resist. One communications director I worked with nearly went mad with frustration trying to convince colleagues that press releases were effectively dead. If you work in the progressive advocacy space, you’ve probably noticed that the old ways of getting your message out just aren’t working the way they used to. Today, we’re operating in a communications ecosystem that’s fragmented, increasingly hostile to progressive messaging, and dominated by outrage-driven algorithms that favor right-wing content. Bottom line: we’re in an asymmetrical information war, and the other side is dominating. So, how do we adapt? So far, some broad lessons are pretty clear: 1. Think in Terms of Distinct Audiences and How to Reach Them 2. Get Comfortable with New Platforms—and Go Where Your Audience Is 3. Communicate in Video and Audio 4. Integrate Real People into Your Communications Strategy 5. Experiment (link to the full post in the comments) I’m going devote upcoming episodes of The Campaign Strategist to this inquiry. I want to interview practitioners who are finding out what works. Who do you think I should talk to? Shoot me a note or drop one in the comments.

On the next episode of The Campaign Strategist, I talk to my good friend George Rakis, who led the first successful campaign to put national carbon pollution standards in place. George brought an electoral campaign mindset to the world of climate advocacy as director of the campaign that was key to convincing the Obama administration to create the Clean Power Plan. I worked closely with George and his team for years and learned a hell of a lot from all of them. I'm sure others will learn from our discussion - check out the full episode when it drops on Feb 18th! New episode of The Campaign Strategist is up! I sit down with the fabulous Danielle Droitsch, an environmental advocate and executive coach. Danielle joins us to talk campaign strategies, power-mapping and avoiding one of the most common traps organizations fall into. Our conversation digs into the importance of focused, strategic actions over broad mobilization efforts, using examples from her work on campaigns like the Keystone XL pipeline and various watershed and wilderness protection initiatives. We also discuss coalition management, the significance of engaging diverse groups, and the challenges of getting collective agreements on strategies.
