You Are All Wrong About the Jaguar Rebrand ??? Jaguar’s recent rebrand has ignited a fiery debate online, with critics calling it the death knell of a legacy automaker. But let’s pump the brakes and take a closer look. Instead of jumping on the outrage bandwagon, let’s acknowledge this for what it really is: a gutsy move from a brand that needed a wake-up call. Because love it or hate it, everyone is talking about Jaguar right now. That’s the whole point. Here’s the thing about rebrands: they’re not just about slapping on a shiny new logo. A brand is an ecosystem of meaning, emotions, and experiences that lives far beyond the design. Jaguar hasn’t been top of mind for a while—except maybe when you see a vintage E-Type cruising by and think, “Wow, remember when Jaguars were cool?” A legacy brand being “forgettable” is way more dangerous than a controversial logo. Forgettable is death in today’s market. Controversy? That’s life support with a megaphone. An Antidote to the Sunday Scaries ?? More than five decades on this planet and I still have not figured out how to quell the Sunday Scaries, until now. First a reminder of the weekly affliction. “Sunday Scaries” is a term that refers to the anxiety or dread you feel on Sunday, typically as the weekend wraps up and you start anticipating the workweek ahead. This feeling can stem from a variety of sources, such as stress over workload, a busy week ahead, or simply the end of a relaxing weekend. In other words, Sunday nights can suck. But in Mexico City last week at our Master Gunners creative workshop, I heard a cure for these Sunday Scaries. Cassandra Constant Visualizes Soccer Game Radio Broadcasts with Pencil and Paper ?? I grew up with a New York Yankees super fan as a father, who listened to every inning of every game on a hand-held transistor radio pressed up against his ear. The soothing sound of legendary commentator Roger Sterling’s voice is central in the soundtrack of my childhood, crackling through our kitchen and living room airwaves, accompanied by my dad’s whoops and groans. My dad normalized listening to sporting events on the radio, but I never thought much of it. Recently, however, I came upon the evocative work of the Spanish artist Cassandra Constant, who’s spent much of her art practice contemplating this very concept. In Constant’s hometown of Madrid, the sport they’re listening to on the radio isn’t baseball, but fútbol, which is a much faster-paced and frenetic sport. Constant began to consider how listeners to soccer games on the radio visualized what they were hearing, and took this questioning to her sketch pad. Since this initial curiosity, Constant has illustrated over 250 soccer games she’s listened to in full. With just pencil and paper, she rapidly sketches the play-by-play relayed to her from the radio, creating a rich world of fútbol frenzy in her finished drawings. Enthralled by her work, I reached out to learn more about her action-packed process. The Daily Heller: Democracy, Where Art Thou? ?? Democracy is on trial, but it worked in one respect. People voted without incident. A candidate won. And the razor-thin margins that were predicted did not come to pass. So, you might say that democracy won, this time around. This year ThoughtMatter designed a provocative mural adapted from Gustave Courbet’s The Origin of the World, which made clear the tangible impact that public art can have on motivating real-world political action. It encouraged New Yorkers to vote “yes” on Proposition 1, which states, “No person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws of this state or any subdivision thereof”—an amendment that successfully passed. I asked ThoughtMatter Managing Partner Jessie McGuire, who has been vigorously engaged in social and political action, about the project and whether ThoughtMatter’s art interventions have truly made a quantifiable difference in 2024. Revolver Type Reimagines Matthew Carter’s Iconic Airport Typeface ?? Rabbit holes can be oh-so-fun. No, not the doomscrolling variety. We’re talking about the kind designers descend into as they nurture the seed of a new idea or a spark inspired by something they’ve seen. We’re talking about the satisfaction and flow that comes from pulling on threads to reveal new paths for our curiosity. Airport, a new typeface designed by Lukas Scheider, founder of Revolver Type Foundry, came out of one such rabbit hole. Schneider saw a vintage counting game for kids from 1979 and the type caught his eye. He was unable to find the typeface, so he engaged a Berlin type designer and researcher, Florian Hardwig, who finally tracked down the mystery typeface: Airport Spotlight, a spin-off of Matthew Carter’s Airport, a typeface designed in 1960 for London Airport (now Heathrow). Meanwhile No. 219 ?? From Heretic to Kurt Cobain, see the latest inspiration, fascination and procrastination from the desk of designer Daniel Benneworth-Gray.? So I finally finished Ripley and now I’m a little obsessed with Caravaggio. Specifically, how his work appears in the show – in stark black and white. The result is quite stunning, accentuating the chiaroscuro contrasts in Caravaggio’s paintings while presenting them as something new. Would love it if Taschen put out a special Ripley edition of The Complete Works minus the colour. … Actually, while I’m making demands of publishers, why the heck haven’t Netflix produced a photobook to go with the show? It’s so very photographic; pretty much every shot a static composition, screaming to be printed.
