???? South Korea aims to deploy 14.3 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and, due to its large deep water wind resource, is set to lead industrial-scale floating wind in the APAC region. The country has leading capabilities in steel, shipbuilding, cables, and electrical components that are shaping in supply chains capable of delivering these mega projects. Other markets in APAC, including China, Taiwan, Japan, the US West Coast and Pacific Islands, Australia, the Philippines, are hot on South Korea’s heels with floating wind awarded or scheduled. Each APAC country offers unique local capabilities, site conditions, and regulatory environment. With many projects moving straight to commercial scale to avoid the expensive and time consuming process of deploying demonstration projects, effective and deliverable strategies demand strategic collaboration across the region that balances local supply chain capabilities with proven technologies and regional/global expertise. As a technology developer with unparalleled operational experience in floating offshore wind, Principle Power has successfully proven the WindFloat? technology with 75 MW operating and 30 MW under construction in Europe. ???? The Asia-Pacific region is poised to become a global leader in offshore wind energy, with TGS | 4C Offshore Wind News reports indicating it could account for about 251 GW capacity by 2050. Floating wind is vital for the decarbonization of economies?in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the US West Coast and Pacific Islands, the Philippines, and Australia which have large coastlines, deep waters, and strong winds in sites close to demand centers. Floating platform technologies like the WindFloat? are now proven and have the ability to unlock this the enormous potential of the deepwater offshore resources in the country. However, gaps in policy frameworks remain, creating significant risks for developers aiming to build the first commercial-scale projects in the region. These risks can be overcome with coordinated action by government and industry to create the right policy conditions for the successful development of floating wind projects, prioritizing proactive stakeholder engagement, predictable procurement auctions that emphasize deliverable economics, and the construction of enabling infrastructure like ports and transmission. If policy makers across the region are able to create the right conditions for deployment, they will activate massive supply chains that build from existing capacity to create a new industry. Successful delivery of the first projects will initiate a virtuous cycle of learning that reduces LCoE and makes GW-scale floating wind projects a competitive and secure resource for APAC economies. Join Aaron Smith at the APAC Offshore Wind Energy Summit 2024 for a deep dive into how Principle Power is using the lessons learned from our 13-year operational track record in Europe to enable projects and local supply chains in the APAC region to scale up with confidence. ?? ?? In Floating Offshore Wind, keeping a safe margin between coupled system eigenfrequencies and excitation loads is crucial to avoid resonance and fatigue damage. As turbines scale up, rotor speeds decrease, resulting in lower 1P and 3P frequencies. Additionally, increased loads demand larger diameters and thicker walls, creating “stiffer” towers. As a result, the design space for traditional “soft-stiff” towers, standard in fixed-bottom offshore wind, is narrowing. Therefore, we see more coupled systems targeting "stiff-stiff" designs for these larger turbines. Without standardized frameworks for eigenfrequency calculations, foundation designers and turbine manufacturers must align closely on model setups and assumptions through integrated load analysis to ensure consistency. ? Real world data from operations also play a vital role in ensuring reliable engineering models, thereby contributing to more optimal and efficient foundations for turbines above 15+ MW capacity. ? Catch-up with Nicolas Germain, Senior R&D Engineer at Principle Power, to learn more on how Principle Power, in collaboration with leading turbine manufacturers, has leveraged data from operating projects to ensure the WindFloat Center Column designs are FEED-ready for all projects globally. ?
