On November 30, 1876, Princeton met Yale in the country's first-ever Thanksgiving college football game. The Tigers lost, but the annual match-up became quite the tradition, attracting so many fans that the game was moved to Columbia University's NYC stadium in the 1880s. From the archives: "The Princeton-Yale Thanksgiving game was so popular that it became a source of revenue for New York’s merchants, who decorated their shops with Princeton orange and black, as well as Yale blue. In 1893,?Harper’s Weekly?referred to the Princeton-Yale game?as “the greatest sporting event and spectacle combined that this country has to show..." While much has changed since - check out the shape of the ball in the photos, and each team had 25 players on the field! - the legacy remains.
