At Prince of Peace, we believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. We were honored to sponsor a remarkable event organized by the Chinese Newcomers Service Center on June 7th at Cameron House in Chinatown. This annual food distribution event aims to provide much-needed assistance to low-income families facing global economic challenges. The event was a resounding success, with 5,000 food packages distributed to residents, creating a truly heartwarming scene. Volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare the food packages in advance, using vibrant orange bags labeled "Chinatown Community Food Pack." Each bag was filled with over 20 items tailored to Chinese dietary habits, provided mainly by the non-profit American Oriental Food Association. These essential goods included fragrant jasmine rice, cooking oil, seasonings, rice noodles, instant beverages, rock sugar, biscuits, and other Chinese foods. San Francisco Mayor London Breed graced the event and personally handed out food packages. She expressed, "This is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to support and uplift one another. And there is nothing better to do that with food and with great people together. But also to allow people to take care of themselves with dignity and have the kind of product that is necessary and in order to make sure especially the seniors don't remain food insecure in San Francisco." The food distribution lasted from 10 AM to 5 PM, with long lines stretching from the street to the venue. Participants, including elderly Chinese residents, children, and families, had pre-registered and received vouchers for the food packages. Raymond Chen, the Executive Director of the Chinese Newcomers Service Center, remarked that inflation has significantly impacted low-income families. Despite supply shortages and rising prices, the collaborative efforts of various organizations and individuals made it possible to gather 5,000 food packages this year. The event was supported by city funding, generous institutions, and over a hundred dedicated volunteers. Chen expressed hope for continued support to sustain this essential event in the coming years. This event, which began in the 1990s, was primarily funded this year by the San Francisco Human Services Agency, Mr. Ying Mou Chen, the American Oriental Food Association, Bank of America, the Garden Corner Parking Company, and the Chinatown Lions Club of San Francisco. The founders of the event, Wing Yiu Tsang, the Pan Foundation, and the Ziao Xue Foundation, also continued their invaluable support. Prince of Peace is proud to have played a part in this impactful initiative, helping to bring joy and relief to so many in our community. We look forward to continuing our support for such meaningful causes and making a difference in the lives of those in need. ??
