Public service is no simple task—meeting the needs of residents takes time, effort, and energy. Public service requires us to take a dynamic approach to meet challenges that our communities face. Every year, we look forward to meeting with our municipal leaders across Prince George's to celebrate them and check-in. Yesterday, we hosted our mayors to honor their dynamic leadership as well as celebrate their accomplishments. These kinds of events have become a yearly tradition in the Alsobrooks Administration and we want to again, express our gratitude to each of the mayors for their service to our residents!

Today, we broke ground on the much-anticipated Fairwood Elementary School. When County Executive Angela Alsobrooks first took office, we faced an $8.5B school construction backlog. With the experiences she heard from communities like Fairwood, we went to Annapolis in 2019 to push for the P3 Alternative Construction Finance Program. As a county government and as a community, one of our most important obligations is to invest in our children and it was long past time to deliver for them. Improving the school construction process across the entire County has been one of our top priorities. The Alsobrooks Administration developed an innovative plan that had never been done anywhere before to support public education, get quality school buildings opened quickly, and save taxpayers money–the Alternative Construction Finance Program through public-private partnership (P3). We’ve now opened 6 ACF buildings in just 3 years at a massive cost savings to taxpayers, and 10 new schools overall. That success is the foundation for Phase 2 of our ACF Schools plan, a blueprint that has caught the attention of other jurisdictions around state and the country. That success is why over the next several months, we’re breaking ground on 8 more new schools. The new Fairwood Elementary School building will be a sustainable, high-performance learning environment and capacity to resolve overcrowding issues. When this building is complete, not only are our partners obligated to maintain it for 30 years, but they are also contracted to work with small, local, and minority owned businesses to do it. This program is a boost to our local economy and an investment in our children’s future in Prince George’s.

Currently: Team Angela Alsobrooks. Always: Interdisciplinary communications professional committed to climate action. 20+ years experience in journalism & advocacy comms to advance smart climate change policy.
This morning I was joined by Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Barry Stanton to accept a generous donation of $10,000 from the Prince George’s County chapter of Epsilon Phi Boulé Foundation to support the Alsobrooks Administration’s ongoing work to address Food Insecurity in our community. I was especially proud to represent the Administration for this meeting, because, let’s be clear— Food Security is a climate change issue. Having worked for years on programs to understand, address and communicate about climate impacts in front line communities, I’ve seen how rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting agricultural patterns disrupt food production and supply chains. It will continue as droughts, floods, and unpredictable growing seasons reduce crop yields, making food scarcer and more expensive. What’s more— these climate impacts disproportionately affect Black and brown communities. Food Insecurity is a key priority for the Alsobrooks Administration. That’s why the County Executive opened the Office of Food Security within the Department of Social Services in 2022. Through strategic partnerships and intragency collaboration we continue to grow and evolve our approach to addressing this important climate change issue. And we’re so grateful to amazing community partners like Epsilon Phi Boulé for their leadership and support in this space.
