A year-long course designed to help investors and philanthropists across asset classes develop a custom impact assessment tool aligned with their investment strategy is being offered by Impact Frontiers and Prime Coalition at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business. Cohort teams are expected to allocate 4 hours/month to the program, which starts in April. The deadline to confirm participation is March 31. In 2023, Prime Coalition partnered with CNote to help achieve Prime's goal of aligning financial priorities with organizational values. At the time, Prime had mobilized over $35MM in catalytic capital for Azolla Ventures Fund I to be deployed into climate solutions that hold the potential for large-scale greenhouse gas reductions and a more just climate for all. Prime’s Impact Cash deposits at CNote have supported 89 banks and credit unions that offer responsive and affordable financial products and services to low- to moderate-income communities, and other under-resourced groups. First-of-a-kind (FOAK) infrastructure projects are critical for scaling climate solutions, yet they face persistent funding gaps. Trellis Climate, a catalytic investment program in its design phase at Prime, is working to bridge this gap by bringing together multiple sources of philanthropic capital to accelerate FOAK projects toward commercial scale. Trellis Climate's support of Nitricity’s FOAK organic fertilizer plant is a prime example—demonstrating how Trellis structures catalytic investments to unlock impact. What makes Trellis Climate different? ? Capital Recovery – Allowing donors to recycle charitable capital for future impact. ? Investor Additionality Assessment – Ensuring catalytic capital is deployed where it’s truly needed. ? Broad Project Pipeline – Supporting high-impact projects beyond existing investor networks. Through Trellis Climate, Prime aligned six philanthropic partners, including private foundations, donor-advised funds, and family offices, using grants and recoverable grants to support this initiative. 2024 was the hottest year on record. I couldn’t help but feel the weight of climate change as extreme weather events hit home. In the U.S. alone,?climate disasters cost over $182.7B, and my heart goes to everyone affected, from the devastating LA wildfires and storms to widespread flooding and other catastrophic events around the globe. In today’s challenging climatic and political landscape, collaboration on high-impact solutions is more critical than ever. As the line between climate risk and financial risk continues to blur, we need robust, forward-looking metrics to pinpoint the innovations that will build a resilient future. That’s why we created?The CRANE Tool (www.cranetool.org). It’s the only free tool of its kind designed to make future-focused impact assessment more accessible. Since 2020, CRANE has helped over 5,600 users—including investors, entrepreneurs, and accelerators— quantify the emissions impact potential of emerging climate solutions. Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited about CRANE’s continued impact as a vital resource for investors and innovators. We’ve refreshed?CRANE’s website?and?app?with a bold new look, joined?LinkedIn, and launched our inaugural CRANE?webinar?focused on model customization. At this year’s Yale Philanthropy Conference, themed "Catalyzing Change", our Executive Director, Sarah Kearney, joined Sheena Strawter-Anthony of the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, and Liqian Ma of Cambridge Associates for a panel discussion on the evolution and challenges of impact investing in philanthropy. The panel was hosted by Camila Novo-Via?o and Eliza Chory-Noyes. Together, they explored the promise of catalytic capital—how philanthropists can deploy charitable dollars while offering the possibility of financial recovery—and how it is distinct from, yet complementary to, mission investing among returns-prioritizing investors. Sarah reflected on Prime’s evolution over the past decade, highlighting that Prime has: ? Mobilized $317MM in catalytic capital ? Collaborated with 420+ philanthropic partners ? Supported 39 portfolio companies ? Introduced 120+ first-time catalytic investors to the space She emphasized how, in the right circumstances, catalytic investments can offer three-fold benefits over traditional grantmaking: 1??
