"What shines through most in Raspanti’s plays is hope fostered by community and through art. Art by its very nature outsurvives its creator and lives on to teach, inspire, and provoke thought. While so many lives in Terezin and other concentration camps were cut tragically short, their art lives on." Meet the cast of I Never Saw Another Butterfly and The Terezin Promise! We asked Jackson Frazer some questions about the show: Tell us a little bit about your character. Hanus Sattler is a young Jewish boy who lives in Terezin. He looks at the world from a realist’s scope and understands the gravity of the situation he finds himself in. Hanus has a deep sense of responsibility to protect his friends from the horrors of the world they are in. He tries to make the most pragmatic decisions in the most dire of times. What are some of the unique challenges that you've encountered during rehearsals? Hanus has the tendency to let his arrogance get the better of him. Finding the best way to portray that has been my greatest challenge in this production. The heavier scenes in act 2 are also emotionally draining, but seeing the impact that this play has makes it all worth it. The art from the Terezin concentration camp lives on and tells the stories of the children who created it. What do you think we could learn from these drawings and poems? The drawings and poems are not just scraps of paper made by kids; they are what represent them. Hanus comes to realize this during the show. His goal is to keep his friends alive, but after hearing the poem of his best friend who perished in Auschwitz, he realizes that the existence of the poems and artwork keeps them alive, even after they have passed on. What's something an audience member should know before they see this play? These shows are the kind that must be seen to keep alive the memories and stories of those who perished within the walls of the camps. It is so important that students my age understand the severity of this event, so it does not happen again. I Never Saw Another Butterfly and The Terezin Promise runs until March 9th at the New Hazlett Theater.
