???Parks are essential infrastructure for public health and equity.??? Los Angeles is leading the way with a new National Park Equity Model, ensuring that communities historically lacking green spaces have greater access to the benefits of parks. Prevention Institute’s Francisco?Romero?and Roxan Rivas?of Pacoima Beautiful were quoted in an Ethnic Media Services?article discussing how parks serve as vital public health assets—offering space for physical activity, social connection, and climate resilience. As a steering committee member for the LA City Parks Needs Assessment, PI is committed to advancing park equity and ensuring that all communities—especially those most impacted by disinvestment—have access to safe, vibrant green spaces. As Los Angeles communities recover from the devastating January wildfires, Prevention Institute stands in solidarity?with those affected. These disasters expose how climate vulnerability compounds racial and environmental injustice, making it urgent to center health equity and community power?in recovery efforts. Altadena’s historically Black community—a community of refuge for Black families born from redlining and racial segregation—was severely impacted, threatening decades of Black homeownership and intergenerational wealth. Rent gouging, displacement, and toxic levels of air pollution further deepen existing inequities. Recovery must go beyond rebuilding—it must be inclusive, just, and led by those most affected. We stand with the @Black LA Relief and @Recovery Fund, the @Open Air Worker Emergency Fund, and others working to reinvest in survivors. As an organization with LA-based staff, we are committed to a recovery that strengthens resilience and community leadership. Read our full statement here. #ClimateJustice #RacialJustice #PublicHealth

Healing justice is essential to promoting safety and wellbeing in our communities. To truly foster healing, we must address generational trauma and systemic oppression in our landscape. The SHINE Learning Community has been exploring healing justice—originally developed by the Southern Kindred Healing Justice Collective—through ongoing discussions. In our October meeting, collaboratives shared how this framework resonates with their community work and how we are our own sources of cultural healing, both individually and collectively. ? Read more in our latest blog post by Alissa Leung Thank you to Deiglis Delgado, Genoveva Islas, MPH, Fatma Saleem, abdullahi shane, Noun Abdelaziz, and Aristea Saulsbury for their insights and contributions. SHINE is a California project stewarded by Prevention Institute (PI), co-created with a Learning Community of five collaboratives, and supported by the Blue Shield of California Foundation. #HealthEquity #RacialJustice #PublicHealth

Supporting local decision makers managing opioid settlement funds: A public health approach When invested strategically and with other funding streams, opioid settlement funds present a critical opportunity to foster healthy, equitable, and thriving communities and alleviate the longstanding harms caused by the opioid epidemic. Beginning in October 2023, Prevention Institute provided technical assistance and capacity building to state and local government decision-makers and practitioners to leverage opioid settlement dollars to identify and fund evidence-based strategies to prevent opioid and other substance misuse and overdose. This work was supported by the CDC’s Division of Overdose Prevention and achieved in partnership with Big Cities Health Coalition, ChangeLab Solutions, RTI International, and SheRay's & Associates, LLC. Together, we delivered direct technical assistance and developed a series of capacity-building materials to inform the use of settlement dollars, including: 1. A landscape analysis. 2. A three-part webinar series. 3. Written guidance materials, such as a set of guiding principles to support settlement fund decision making and strategy development. 4. An online resource hub. Prevention Institute’s project resources can inform balanced investments across the prevention continuum and a greater emphasis on community-level primary prevention strategies, especially those that are designed in partnership with people with lived and living experience and are based in best available research, experiential, and contextual evidence. We will continue to partner with local jurisdictions as they prioritize public health approaches and the needs of people most impacted by opioid and substance misuse in their work.
