New Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Study Highlights the Importance of Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Among Teens A new CDC report reveals that ACEs, such as abuse, neglect, and witnessing violence, are far too common among U.S. high school students. With 3 in 4 teens experiencing at least one ACE, the link between these experiences and mental health challenges is undeniable. The good news? Prevention can make a tremendous impact. By preventing ACEs, suicide attempts among teens could decrease by up to 89%, prescription pain medication misuse by 84%, and persistent feelings of sadness by 66%. At PCA America, we are proud to contribute to this vital research, and we remain committed to building safe, stable, and nurturing environments that prevent ACEs before they start. Together, we can create healthier futures for all children, support families, and strengthen communities. Did you know? Native American children are the most overrepresented population in the child welfare system, being 207% more likely to enter care than their white peers. We need to change that! On Indigenous People’s Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and wisdom of Indigenous communities. It’s important to make sure Indigenous families have access to good healthcare, mental health support, and resources to help their children grow and thrive. By respecting traditional knowledge and supporting family well-being, we can help create a healthier future for generations to come. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #FamilyHealth #ChildWellbeing #CulturalStrength #StrongFamilies #Prevention

Kids do best when they have caring adults in their lives. But neglect is the most common form of child abuse and can hurt their health and development. Families who are under a lot of stress, especially when they don’t have the resources or support they need, are more likely to face challenges with neglect. Let’s work together to support these families and help keep their children happy, healthy, and safe. Did you know? In 2023, 33% of parents reported high stress, compared to 20% of other adults. The U.S. Surgeon General warns that parental stress is affecting family health and well-being nationwide. At PCA America, we’re helping reduce this stress by supporting early childhood home visiting programs like Healthy Families America and studying the impact of family-friendly policies like paid family and medical leave. When families have access to support and resources, they face less stress and can afford housing, food, and childcare. The US House of Representatives approved the Protecting America’s Children by Strengthening Families Act (H.R. 9076) by a vote of 405-10. This legislation was introduced by Representative Darin Lahood and Representative Danny Davis and would reauthorize and make reforms to Title IV-B, a key federal child welfare law. Key provisions include helping prevent child abuse and neglect, keeping families together, and ensuring children are not separated from their parents solely because of poverty. October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month. Supporting parents and caregivers is key to preventing SIDS and promoting family well-being. Safe sleep practices, such as placing babies on their backs to sleep and ensuring a safe sleep environment, can reduce risks. Home visiting programs like Healthy Families America help parents and caregivers navigate the ins and outs of early childhood and access the resources needed to provide their kids with the nurturing care that will lead to a healthy and happy life. Let’s work together to raise awareness, provide support for families, and create a safe and healthy future for all children. #SIDSawareness #SafeSleep #ParentalSupport #FamilyWellbeing

It's Malnutrition Awareness Week! Good nutrition is key for a child's growth, health, and overall wellbeing. Malnutrition affects families worldwide and can cause serious health problems, especially for kids. PCA America is building a primary prevention ecosystem in the U.S. so that all families have what they need to stay healthy and happy, like food and financial security. That's because we know that children who live in families with access to economic and other concrete supports, like SNAP and childcare, are less likely to experience abuse and neglect. Let’s raise awareness about food insecurity, support prevention policies and programs, and make sure every child has access to healthy food.
