Recently a friend asked me if I am more of a "Visionary" or "Integrator", to borrow from the EOS language. My candid response was, "I've never really been sure. Sometimes I love one and loathe the other and vice versa." Now, throw the big caveat in there that this EOS language is meant for leaders of companies of a certain size, which I DO NOT meet the criteria. So, that may be more important in explaining my response than anything else I share here. I thought about the question via The Six Types of Working Genius and how maybe the answer is in what type of geniuses you have. To spare you a lengthy breakdown, basically my profile works from the inside out (Geniuses are D, G. Competencies are E, I. Frustrations are W, T.) Meaning, I like the middle portion of work and get frustrated by the bookends of work. Personally, I'd be willing to believe that visionaries and integrators could have any type of genius spread. However, if I had to guess trends, you'd probably see more visionaries live in the first 4 geniuses (W to G) and integrators in the latter 4 geniuses (D to T). I'd actually love to see a any potential data around this, maybe a collaboration between EOS Worldwide and The Six Types of Working Genius?? To cap the insights, relooking at my genius spread seemed to validate my oscillating emotions towards the visionary or integrator question. Realistically, in the long-term I see myself leaning towards more visionary, but I am thankful for this season where I get to swing back and forth between the two! Would love to hear your thoughts around whether you see yourself as a visionary or integrator and/or a wrestling you've ever had with the terms!

An oldie but a goodie! As you round out your week and, hopefully, plan a little for next week. Let our coffee visual be a reminder to prioritize the bulk of your work time in your areas of genius (the work that fills you up), regulate work related to your competencies (the stuff that slowly drains you), and eliminate or gamify the work that is truly your frustration (the stuff you will simply never like doing). The days we feel rejuvenated and inspired, as well as the days we feel drained beyond belief and just over it, chances are there is an extremely high correlation to the type of work/area of genius you spent that day in! Don't know your geniuses? Take the assessment at workinggenius.com or reach out to us and we can help set you as well as get you a discounted assessment(s)!

For the brave and necessary souls that carry with them the Genius of Enablement (E) from The Six Types of Working Genius and make all of our lives run smoother and with more joy, this may be a helpful note to hear today! E's face a daily covert dynamic no matter their Genius pairing. They desire to "help" others. Simple. Heart filled. Ready to go. The covert issue? Sometimes our interpretations of "helping" are off when we have misalignments internally, in a relationship, or with the mission. Take an ET (Enablement + Tenacity) pairing going into a weekly meeting. One interpretation of "helpful" would be for the ET to just say yes to whatever is brought up and not push back so the meeting leader can have an easy and seamless meeting, basically "short-term helping". Another interpretation would be for the ET to lean into their T to wrestle with the team lead for clarity on what exactly is expected of them and/or others to ensure everyone walks away knowing how what is expected of them to best help the team, in other words "long-term helping". Flip the script with an EW (Enablement + Wonder) where the W is silenced, big picture inquiries and ideas not shared to not force the team to reevaluate or start over (short-term helping) versus calling out the big theme that was missed, leading to potential failure for the project (long-term helping). Maybe one more. An ED (Enablement + Discernment) opting out of their D and saying yes to helping on a project or task when they are clearly at capacity with their own workload to make their teammate feel supported (short-term helping) rather than leaning into being a one-time thought partner or connector to someone with more capacity (long-term helping). In each of those examples, by reframing E through the help your other genius can bring to those around you, you get to double dip in feeling fulfilled through that genius and your E. Our Geniuses each carry superpowers and blind spots. If you are an E, take time to consider if you are shutting off your other Genius in pursuit of "short-term helping" when the team may need a long-term approach. Oh... and know that you rock and are doing an awesome job if no one has shown you any tangible appreciation recently! Work doesn't work without E's!

We've been having a lot of conversations around Jim Collins' "right bus, right seat" mindset with our clients as we close out 2024 and help them plan for 2025. Collins shared that when Colman Mockler became CEO of Gillette in 1975, he spent 55% of his time moving people around in seats on the bus to ensure the company was ready for its new direction. Some people had to get off and some people to be added, but the majority of that time was rearranging the existing people to be in the positions where they could contribute the most to the business for the new journey. In our experience working with The Six Types of Working Genius, the model has provided startling clarity to business owners when navigating how to rearrange existing people, have language for hard conversations about getting off the bus, and frame exactly who you need for what seat before inviting someone else onto the bus. There is certainly more to the model than its ability to help with staffing and hiring, but even this component alone would be worth an owner or team lead's investment. The difference between THINKING about the right people on the bus and in the right seats versus actually EXPERIENCING it in your business are light years apart. If you've never experienced it, had the language to identify it, or maybe only caught glimpses of it, you should really consider digging into this model and working with a group like ours to see how it can help you unlock the potential sitting within your organization in 2025.

Our team is reading Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara and this quote embodies what models like The Six Types of Working Genius and EOS Worldwide provide to people who utilize them! Via 6WG, by understanding how you are meant to work (ridding guilt) and understanding how those around you are meant to work (ridding judgement), team members and managers are able to properly separate emotion/the personal from operational feedback. Similarly, EOS creates immense clarity around objectives and expectations so that feedback isn't based on emotions but previously agreed upon metrics and intent. If you struggle with emotion running the feedback loops throughout your team and you want to create more clarity, we'd love to help give you an introduction into either model as you prepare for 2025! Also, highly recommend giving Unreasonable Hospitality a read, no matter your industry. Extremely well written. Very entertaining and great at educating on the principles. Lastly, and most importantly, inspiring to operate differently!

In a recent workshop, one of our participants was an I D (Discriminating Ideator). After reading our rendition of their profile, these few lines stuck out: "Other people can feel... intimidated or put off by the confidence and/or excitement in how the I D shares their ideas. Their enthusiasm can be mistaken as galvanizing, leading others to think they are not allowed to participate in ideation with the I D. An I D wants their surrounding team to step in when they hear excitement, not step back. Simultaneously, an I D needs to be self aware about their intensity and that others may not have thought about the subject matter as much as the I D has at that point." We used a parenting experience to help exemplify this. Anyone with kids, especially boys, knows they love to "wrestle". However, do you think they want to wrestle to "win" against dad, mom, sibling, or friend? Not really. They just like to wrestle! Wrestling is a form of play and kids love to play. For an I D, when you or they start to feel their intensity and excitement, they may just be signaling that they want to mentally "wrestle"/"play" (i.e. collaborate) with you. It can feel like they are wanting to "win" with the right idea, but in reality they just want to play and explore in excitement with those around them. The next time you work with the I D on your team, listen to their contributions with this in mind and take a step in to "play" and see what innovations it can bring for the team and fulfillment to the I D. In a recent session with a client, two members on the team had the same genius pairing. HOWEVER, both team members show up very differently to their team and during our Individual Debrief portion of the session it led to the team saying: ???? 1?? For person one that their profile was a 10/10 and couldn't be more spot on. ???? 2?? For the second person, they gave a rating of 6/10 based on what they see in their working relationship. It was then amazing to hear from both person 1 and person 2, who everyone perceives as extremely different, confirming that their profiles were definite 10/10's! The gasp on the team when person 2 confirmed the profile was both fun and insightful. This prompted us to go over how our genius pairings are not indicative of whether we are introverted or extroverted, or even prescriptive on how we present ourselves. Our pairings highlight where we find fulfillment in the work that we do and even though it looks and shows up differently, the root of what gives us life in our work can certainly be shared. In the image below we highlight a very high level summary of how the I, G pairing can show up. Some can be loud, forthcoming, and compel people to action through their inspiration or energy, while others can be a quiet presence that speaks few words that carry a lot of weight that moves people towards action. Both have different approaches and postures, but they get to the same type of work - creating ideas and mobilizing people to act on them. It is this level of "root work" that The Six Types of Working Genius gets to that is so impressive and worthy of each individual, team lead, and business owner's time to explore.

One of our original posts that time and time again comes up in our conversations with individuals, leaders, and teams of all sizes - "What do you want?" Some say this is the hardest question in life. Maybe out of a fear in being honest with ourselves or feeling greedy for asking for it? If you needed permission to ask for what you want today, let us grant that to you! And if any of the words in the image resonate with you, we are confident that The Six Types of Working Genius model can deliver those to you and your team through the clarity and actionability it brings to the work place. It is okay to say what you want and take steps towards getting it. And if we can be a help along the way, even better!
