Onychomycosis is a fungal infection affecting the nail unit, with an incidence rate of approximately 10% among adults. The prevalence of this condition increases in individuals aged 60 and older. Fungal nail infections pose significant risks for elderly individuals, as well as those who are diabetic or immunocompromised. ? The effective treatment of these infections is crucial for global health. We want to spotlight two helpful articles we have recently reviewed to discuss the diagnosis, treatment, and management of onychomycosis cases. ? In preparation for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW), it’s crucial to understand the most common way pathogens gain resistance: When antibiotics are misused. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one-third of antibiotic use in people is unnecessary or appropriate. This can mean that for a time that is too short, too small a dose, at inadequate strengths, or for the wrong disease, bacteria are not killed and can pass on survival traits to even more bacteria. This results in stronger infections. Preventing infections in the first place is our first line of defense against antimicrobial resistance. Pretorian Labs understands this is easier said than done, which is why we offer antibiotic resistance testing with our UTI, Wound, and Women’s Health panels. If there are resistant pathogens detected, our report, combined with Arkstone's OneChoice Report, provides the most accurate antibiotic. This helps improve patient outcomes by optimizing the treatment of infections, avoiding drug-related side effects, and drastically slowing the development of antimicrobial resistance. Ensuring that our clients receive the most accurate results, and their patients receive the most accurate care.

FUNGAL DISEASE AWARENESS In the month of September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and various other public health entities are emphasizing Fungal Disease Awareness. This year, two of the primary subjects of focus include the global rise in fungal disease cases and the escalating issue of antimicrobial resistance associated with fungal infections. Confirmatory testing of possible fungal infections through laboratory testing can help slow down the increase in antimicrobial resistance. https://lnkd.in/eFFJyGsX
