Providing NYC Public Schools the Free Tools to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs
关于我们
Over 8 out of 10 NYC public schools have no student journalism program whatsoever. Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced schools with the free faculty training, student resources, and program support necessary to start a sustainable school newspaper and/or news site. Seeing a school newspaper in every public school in New York City, in the form that’s best for that school and those students, is how our approach will and does make all the difference.

"Across the country, schools are recognizing the importance of media literacy and the role it plays in helping students think critically, communicate effectively, and engage with their communities. Early journalism experiences help students develop skills in leadership, teamwork, and public speaking — all of which are highly sought after in today’s job market." https://lnkd.in/eamj8dzC

Thank you, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, for another awesome convention attended by more NYC Department of Education students than ever before, including so many of our Press Pass NYC schools. (John Dewey! Pace! Bronx River! Cardozo! Forest Hills! Queens Technical HS!) And thank you former PPNYC Youth Advisory Board member, Elliot Heath, for hosting a fascinating panel for us with your fellow Columbia Daily Spectator teammates, editors August Phillips and Joseph Zuloaga. A huge honor and treat to present with great friends and collaborators, Beth Fertig , Erin Schneider and Terry Parris Jr., and Chatwan Mongkol ! And to be in the company of so many passionate students and educators serving their school and local communities through their journalism every day. They aren't the future of journalism, they are the definition of journalism.

“To excuse or justify the actions of these criminals as saving a family’s honor is based off of outdated, misogynistic beliefs that continue to enforce a dangerous patriarchy.†The so-called “honor killing†of a NY teen on vacation in Pakistan really hit home for students at the Queens School of Inquiry, where 35% of the students are of Asian descent. Community journalism can be a catalyst to accelerate change. But for community journalism to be a catalyst, we need more community journalists and ccommunity journalism supporters. These community journalists and community journalism supporters also need to be representative of the communities they are serving to ensure we tell all the stories that matter and create opportunities to create equitable change. That is why it's inspiring to see the work Press Pass NYC is doing with students and educators in New York City, along with all of the Journalism for All movement in New York. Journalism for All can lead to Justice for All, and we need to keep growing this movement across the United States. Organizations that can help: ???? Rebuild Local News + its nonpartisan coalition of 3,000-plus newsrooms ???? National Newspaper Association + its 2,300 community newspaper members ???? America's Newspapers + its 1,700 newspaper and Solutions Partners companies ???? News/Media Alliance + its more than 2,000 news and magazine media organizations and multiplatform businesses ???? Alliance for Community Media + its more than 1,700 Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) access organizations and community media centers throughout the United States ???? And many more organizations that value community journalism, independent local media, and a free press. We need all hands on deck to strengthen the Journalism for All movement. When more underserved communities get access to community journalism opportunities, more communities can be served trusted community journalism. By engaging all communities with journalism, we can: ? Increase literacy ? Increase media literacy ? Increase civic engagement ? Bring people together ? Empower communities ? Give everyone an opportunity to thrive Community journalism programs are an entry point. Providing trusted news and information is the mission. Now is the time. How does working on a student newspaper empower young people? "I was very antisocial but I feel like journalism gave me an opportunity to get out of my comfort zone, talk to different people about their opinions on different topics." Watch Mariam (left) and Elairis (right) of PS/IS 218 in the Bronx discuss their experience starting a new student publication this school year with our help. Their paper is called Noticias 218. It's at a dual language school.
