  • Preservation NC Property Spotlight: The William Morrison Sr. House, Macon County ??? Hidden beneath layers of debris and time lay a historic treasure—the Morrison House, the oldest standing structure in northern Macon County. Built in 1832 by William Morrison Sr., this one-room log cabin withstood the Civil War, time, and nature itself. But by the early 2000s, it was in dire need of saving. Enter Cindy and Jackie Gregory. Passionate about history and craftsmanship, they saw the beauty beneath the wear. With careful hands and a reverence for the past, they restored the home—using original materials wherever possible. The wavy glass panes, hand-hewn logs, and fieldstone chimney now stand as a testament to generations of resilience and care. Thanks to a partnership between Mainspring Conservation Trust and Preservation North Carolina, this historic gem was conserved for future generations while finding a family who could bring it back to life. Now, it’s not just a home—it’s a living piece of history.

  • Black architects, craftsmen, and laborers have always been central to the story of North Carolina's architectural history, and we're interested in making sure their achievements are recognized across the state! That's why we developed "We Built This" -- a traveling exhibit showcasing the extraordinary stories of more than two dozen builders, craftsmen, and architects responsible for the construction of some of North Carolina’s treasured landmarks. Spanning more than three centuries,?"We Built This"?provides personal profiles and historic context on key topics including slavery and Reconstruction; the founding of HBCUs and Black churches; Jim Crow and segregation; and the rise of Black civic leaders and professionals. Interested in hosting "We Built This" in your community? Reach out to us today at PresNC.org!

"There’s a long history of Black communities recalibrating architectural form and experimenting with the use of space...I think that Black architectural modernity was about modernizing vernacular practices, and bringing them into contemporary uses so that you could stay connected with the past." Conserving Black Modernism Fellow Dr. Charles L. Davis II?discusses how Black artists and activists have long modernized inherited spaces; turning abandoned homes and buildings into communal hubs, educational sites, and spaces of artistic expression. • The Mott House (Mooresville, Iredell Co.) was built circa 1885 by Dr. Walter B. Mott for his family. The two-and-one-half story house is constructed in the Queen Anne style. The house features a unique cross-gable roof design, under which the two wings of the home are of equal size and form an X-shaped plan. The wings are joined in the center of the fa?ade by a steep gable that towers over the elegant entrance porch, which is decorated with brackets and sawnwork that were highlights of the Queen Anne influence. The interior of the Mott House retains most of its original features, including six original wooden mantels of varying Victorian designs. In 2005 PNC was brought in to help because the house had to be relocated to be saved. The house originally sat on the edge of the Lowe’s Corporate Mooresville property. Lowe’s agreed to offer up to $50,000 towards the moving cost and another $100,000 in materials for the rehabilitation of the Historic Mott House. In 2007, we finally found preservation minded buyers who were willing to relocate the house and rehab it. #transformation #historicproperty #Mooresville #irdell #nchomes #NChistory #homemovers

  • Transformation Tuesday: Mt. Giles Waterworks, Montgomery County Built in the 1930s as part of a depression-era public works project, the Mt. Gilead Waterworks Plant is another Preservation NC success story! After being replaced by more modern infrastructure, this 1930s waterworks plant just outside of Mt. Gilead was abandoned and left behind. As the decades passed, what had once been a symbol of New Deal-era modernization programs was boarded up and left to rot and rust away. By 2014/15, however, new owners had decided to give the property a new lease on life, and began the long process of converting the waterworks into a residential space! By 2021 their work was complete, and what had once been an eyesore was transformed into an amazing home — now secured under PNC’s protective covenants! #transformationtuesday #transformation #NChistory #mtgilead #piedmont #NCArchitecture #nc #nchouses #nchomes #historicnc #historicpreservation #historicpreservationist #historichomes #preservation #architecture #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #uniquehomes #historicproperty #restoration #RestorationProject #publicworks #newdeal?

  • Transformation Tuesday: The Patrick St. Lawrence House in Pittsboro, NC! Built circa 1787 as an inn, the Patrick St. Lawrence House is the oldest building in the town of Pittsboro, and an outstanding example of the Georgian/Federal style put to practice in rural North Carolina! Built by the eponymous Patrick St. Lawrence — one of Pittsboro’s early town commissioners, a trustee of Pittsboro Academy, local Freemason, and an innkeeper — the property was an epicenter for Pittsboro’s early history, and was renowned for such architectural features as its closed-stringer staircase and expanding ballroom. In St. Lawrence’s own lifetime, the property was lauded for its woodwork, and described as being constructed form fine, imported wood. Not so, we later discovered! When Janet Carney removed layers of paint from doors and woodwork, she discovered that the “fine, imported wood” was actually faux mahogany finish on yellow pine lumber. Changing hands several times over the 19th and 20th centuries, the property was eventually purchased by Chatham County, which decided to move it to Pittsboro’s historic district in 2011. Around this time, Preservation North Carolina placed an easement on the property to ensure its safety, and began searching for someone interested in rehabilitating the home. And boy, did we find them. Ray & Janet Carney purchased the Patrick St. Lawrence house in 2012, and set to work restoring the 225-year-old property with gusto! We’re incredibly proud of the Carney’s and their efforts, and happy to see that one of Pittsboro’s most historic properties now looks better than ever! #transformationtuesday #transformation #NChistory #pittsboro #pittsboroNC #piedmont #NCArchitecture #nc #nchouses #nchomes #historicnc #historicpreservation #historicpreservationist #historichomes #preservation #architecture #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #spanishmission #uniquehomes #historicproperty #restoration #restorationproject

  • Preservation North Carolina is excited to announce that its acclaimed? We Built This?traveling exhibit is now on display in Chapel Hill at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Research in Black Culture and History! We Built This?tells the extraordinary stories of over two dozen African American builders, craftsmen, and architects spanning more than three centuries. The exhibit provides personal profiles and explores key historical themes, including slavery and Reconstruction, the founding of HBCUs and Black churches, Jim Crow and segregation, and the rise of Black civic leaders and professionals. Many of the historic buildings we revere today are credited to their owners, but the skilled labor and artistry of African Americans have too often gone unrecognized.?We Built This?aims to change that narrative by acknowledging the individuals whose engineering, construction, and business acumen helped create the historic structures we collectively treasure. The exhibit also sheds light on how many of these builders emerged as political and social leaders in their communities. Interested in bringing We Built This to your community? Reach out to PNC Today by Email, Phone, or DM us on Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn! #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #webuiltthis #civilrights #nchistory #history #preservation #historicpreservation
