From a local pizzeria to an 860M DKK acquisition???? ? Back in 2015, Helle Uth, GP in #PSVTech, had her first meeting with the founders of OrderYOYO. Just two months later, PSV provided a discovery loan of 500K DKK—and by October, we went all in. Why? According to Helle’s notes from the investment recommendation back then, it was clear: this team could execute, and they had hit on something with a huge potential????? ? Founded by Thor Angelo and Thomas Paulsen, quickly joined by Hakan Yagci, OrderYOYO tackled a major pain point in the takeaway industry at just the right time. Their first agreement with a local pizzeria quickly snowballed into a platform that has processed over 20 million orders??? ? Fast forward to today: OrderYOYO is being acquired for 860M DKK by British private equity firm Pollen Street Capital (PSC). Amazing work by the company's current CEO, Jesper Johansen and his team. How can cleantech innovation strengthen Europe’s competitiveness? ? That was the grand topic when #PSVHafnium hosted a roundtable with Cleantech for Nordics, bringing together policymakers, investors, key ecosystem players and the industry. With the EU’s Industrial Clean Deal just launched, the timing could not be better, and it aligns perfectly with PSV Hafnium’s strategy to invest in the most groundbreaking deep tech of tomorrow. Funding is vital for building deep tech champions in Europe, but if the core conditions and regulatory frameworks aren’t in place, it will be hard for startups to succeed. ? In the first core session, Tommy Ahlers, investor, entrepreneur and former Minister of Innovation, set the stage, followed by Marianne Thellersen, Senior Vice President for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at DTU. They framed strong discussions on the path from innovation to implementation. ? PSV Hafnium portfolio company Dynelectro also gave a peak into the daily reality all deep tech companies face;?navigating the barriers of market entry when bringing new groundbreaking technology to the market. ? Regulation is inevitable in deep tech, and we cannot drive this agenda alone. ???From Startup Nation to Tax Trap? ? In 2024, a broad majority in the Danish Parliament introduced an entrepreneurial package aimed at making Denmark a world-class startup hub. But as of January 1, 2025, a new tax rule threatens to do just the opposite??? ? B?rsen highlights how startups can no longer immediately expense investments in software, patents, and know-how—hitting the most innovative companies right where it hurts: cash flow??? ? One of those companies is wayfare.ai, a #PSVTech portfolio company investing heavily in R&D to develop cutting-edge data solutions. But under the new rules, they’ll face higher corporate taxes—even though their product is still in development?????As Kasper Simonsen, CEO of wayfare.ai, puts it: ? “The problem is that large, established companies can obtain loans from the bank easily, whereas startups like ours can't just take their software, which is still in development, and borrow 1 million from the bank to pay taxes." ? Who’s hit the hardest? The early-stage startups building the future. ? The Danish Ministry of Taxation estimates that businesses will pay 8 billion DKK more in corporate taxes in 2025—money that would otherwise fuel innovation and job creation. At #PSVTech, we invest in companies shaping the future????But with this new tax rule, we risk stalling innovation before it even gets off the ground. ? As Sebastian von Wildenrath Wegmann, Principal at #PSVTech, explains: “This change could significantly hinder early-stage growth. Instead of fostering innovation, it creates financial bottlenecks that are tough to overcome. In the worst case, startups may move development abroad to more startup-friendly environments.”????? ?
