What can a jelly bean guessing contest tell us about markets? Well, we looked to find out…?We did an adaptation of Joel Greenblatt’s jelly bean test for how markets work. First, we used M&M’s.. personal preference over jelly beans. At our weekly meeting, we at Premier Path Wealth Partners each submitted our best guess of how many M&Ms were in jars 1 and 2. Next, the average guess for each jar was calculated. For Jar 1, the average was read aloud. We could each then submit an updated guess, if we chose; or stick with our original guess. The goal was to get as close as possible to the actual number in the jar – regardless of whether it was higher or lower than the actual amount. For Jar 2, we could submit by written (closed ballot, essentially) an updated guess or stick with our original estimate. Conclusion: A group of people are very good at guestimating independently. But much less accurate, as a crowd, when we hear others’ opinions. Jar 1: The actual number was 454. The group's average was 334, which was off by -120. After hearing the average, the group's second round guess was 328, which was off by -126, including those who revised their guesses. Jar 2: The actual number was 317. The group's average was 334, which was off by -1. After hearing the average, the group's second round guess averaged 328, which was off by +15, including those who revised their guesses. Real life corollaries: “Stock XYZ is going to $58” may arise after noticing the stock price has risen from $53 to $56 over the course of the week. Similarly, someone may say “The S&P should be around 5,500” after seeing a chart on CNBC showing the index drop from 6,100 to 5,600. These reactions reflect how market participants can be influenced by short term fluctuations rather than a deeper analysis. Too often we don’t even realize we do it. In the early 20th century, the introduction of Ford's Model T revolutionized the automobile market, both for personal and commercial use. As prices for the car fell, the number of manufacturers increased, and car ownership surged. This trend mirrors the growing accessibility of AI technology: as AI computing systems become more affordable and available to smaller companies, applications expand into various industries and adoption increases. Just as lower costs drove widespread adoption of automobiles, reducing the barriers to AI adoption is opening up new possibilities across various industries, including healthcare, education, and beyond.
