A few hours ago, Project Stargate was announced. OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX are teaming up to build an AI infrastructure powerhouse, with a staggering $500 billion investment by 2029. The project kicks off with $100 billion already being deployed—starting in Abilene, Texas. The Goal: - Massive data centers, cutting-edge compute power, and securing U.S. leadership in AI. - Partners like Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Arm are on board, with Masayoshi Son (SoftBank’s chairman) leading the charge. But let’s dig deeper. ?? Does AI replace jobs, or create them: The project promises to create 100,000 jobs while shaping the next decade of AI, but AI’s history raises fears of automation-driven unemployment. The truth likely lies in shifting roles, not elimination. ?? A technological gap: Projects like this highlight the growing divide between nations that can afford such advancements and those that cannot. Will it truly benefit the world, or widen the gap? ?? Timelines and realities: Four years seems very ambitious. More likely 8–15. Large-scale infrastructure takes time. And while AI is advancing fast, economic and logistical realities can’t be ignored. ?? Engineering demand isn't fading: As AI improves, more code will be written, not less. Every major tech leap, from compilers to the internet, has created new roles and higher demand for engineers. Future engineers may focus more on reviewing and optimizing than coding from scratch. This project feels like the dawn of a new era, but it’s also a reminder of the challenges we face: equity, sustainability, and balancing innovation with access. What an interesting time to be alive! AI agents are not a type of robot, software, or simple automation. AI agents are a broad category and aren’t limited to LLMs. From reinforcement learning agents in robotics, computer vision agents for surveillance, to predictive maintenance agents in manufacturing...They’re all AI agents focused on achieving different goals. AI agents are autonomous digital entities designed to make decisions, adapt, and take actions independently to achieve specific goals within a dynamic framework. And they are not the same as Agentic AI or Agentic Workflows. Think of AI agents as the autonomous 'doers' in a system. Agentic AI is the overarching concept of AI behaving autonomously and goal-oriented, often involving multiple agents or agentic workflows. Agentic workflows provide the adaptive structure that enables AI agents to achieve their goals. In short, AI agents operate within agentic workflows, and Agentic AI refers to the entire approach of autonomous, goal-driven AI systems. We’re going to see and work with more and more AI agents on a daily basis. ?Also, this is a topic I’ve been especially interested in lately, and I’ve invited Prof. Jia Li for a deeper conversation about it.
