Lourdes Rivera has dedicated her career to advancing sexual and reproductive rights through law, policy, and philanthropy. Her commitment to reproductive justice is deeply personal—rooted in the history of forced sterilizations of Puerto Rican women, a reality she learned about as a child. In 2024, Rivera testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s historic hearing on the post-Dobbs landscape, exposing the dangers of fetal personhood laws and the broader threats to reproductive freedom. A Yale Law School graduate, she has used her legal expertise to champion policies that protect reproductive autonomy for all. Some good news: Last August, we filed a?legal brief?in support of Moira Akers, a Maryland woman who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for experiencing a stillbirth, arguing that it is unlawful to use her decisions during pregnancy as evidence against her. Last week, the Maryland Supreme Court decided that her conviction could not stand and that there needed to be a new trial. This ruling will be used across the country to fight against the criminalization of pregnancy loss. We hope Maryland will make the right choice by dropping this unfounded prosecution and upholding Ms. Akers’ lawfully protected rights. The state cannot use actions during pregnancy to criminalize people for their birth outcomes.
