160,000 troops were involved in combat in Operation Overlord, the invasion of Nazi occupied France. This was a massive combined arms invasion force with troops from allied nations along with partisans embedded in France. It was a success and started a chain of events which led to Germany's surrender under a year later on May 8, 1945.
