Illuminating conference yesterday on how AI can be deployed in the drinks industry. Huge thanks to Preferabli and The Drinks Business and Patrick Schmitt MW for hosting. Topline: convivial IRL experiences are a fundamental human need - AI is there as a tool to augment and amplify these but it could never attempt to replace them. It can also be used by human experts - sommeliers, buyers, marketers - to do better and more efficient work rather than be seen as a threat their existence. Three takeaways: - AI's ability to make unpredictable recommendations to drinkers based on user profiling, and of styles, varietals and vintages that is on a whole new level of data sophistication - AI bringing to bear multi-sensory experiences as well as a sense of environment, ambiance and mental state to disproportionately augment drinking experiences - Overcoming the limits of technical vocabulary - so often impenetrable and intimidating, especially in wine - via remote digital experiences like virtual winery and distillery tours Highlight of the day was discussing with Andrew Sussman how mindfulness and eyes-open meditation could augment wine tastings either as a mental palette cleanser or integrated into the experience itself.
