An extraordinary study on virus inactivation, conducted by the National Infection Service, the Centre for Chemical, Radiation and Environmental Hazards at Public Health England, and the CBR Division of The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in England, utilized a Precision X-Ray, Inc. MultiRad225 to explore X-ray inactivation of RNA viruses without loss of biological characteristics. Current phenomena are causing environmental changes that have led to an increase in the transmission of viral pathogens, something we are highly aware of due to events related to COVID-19. This highlights the need for effective and reproducible workflows that enable safe, scalable, and rapid pathogen inactivation. X-ray irradiation emerges as a powerful alternative to chemical and thermal methods, preserving the biological integrity of samples. X-ray irradiation was performed on a MultiRad225?X-ray Irradiator?delivering a total X-ray dose of 50kGy. An accurate understanding of the doses required for virus inactivation using D-values (which refer to the time or radiation needed to reduce the virus population by 90%) is crucial. This can be achieved with current plug-and-play instrumentation, such as the MultiRad225, which delivers highly penetrative irradiation doses, enabling viral inactivation even through stringent sample packaging systems. The results showed that X-ray inactivation can be effectively achieved for a range of medically important zoonotic viruses. X-ray irradiation is a reliable method for pathogen inactivation, allowing the production of non-infectious whole-virus material that retains its key biochemical and immunological properties under standard inactivation conditions. These findings provide a unique tool for quickly developing reagents for various downstream applications in a safe and reproducible way. We're excited to see the team of Babak Afrough, Jonathan Eakins, Sarah Durley-White, Stuart Dowall, Stephen Findlay-Wilson, Victoria Graham, Daniel P. Carter, Kuiama Lewandowski, and Roger Hewson?from the National Infection Service, the Centre for Chemical, Radiation, and Environmental Hazards at Public Health England, and the CBR Division of the Defense and Science Technology Laboratories in England using our technology to drive innovation in virus inactivation and biosafety! A collaborative study conducted at Insel Gruppe University of Bern (Switzerland) and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany utilized the Precision X-Ray, Inc. SmART+ IGRT (Image-guided Radiotherapy System) to evaluate the response of various head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) models with different HPV and p53 statuses. The study investigated treatments involving irradiation (IR), DNA-PKcs inhibition (peposertib), and their combination both in vitro and in vivo, aiming to explore DNA-PKcs inhibition as a potential novel approach to HNSCC treatment. Currently, radiotherapy (RT), surgery, and systemic chemotherapy are the primary treatments for locally confined or locoregionally advanced HNSCC. However, their effectiveness is often limited by high toxicity and treatment-related side effects. Radiosensitizing agents, such as DNA-PKcs inhibitors, may help reduce radiation doses while maintaining or even enhancing efficacy. In this study, mouse xenograft models were established using UM-SCC-74A (p53 WT) and UD-SCC-2 (HPV+) cell lines, injected subcutaneously into the right posterior flank of 5-week-old male and female NMRI-nu mice. Tumors were precisely irradiated with 2 Gy per fraction for five consecutive days (total dose: 10 Gy) using the Precision X-Ray, Inc. SmART+ system, ensuring targeted delivery while sparing healthy tissue. While previous studies assessed peposertib efficacy with cabinet irradiators, this is the first study using a RT platform (SmART+) that enables real-time imaging and clinical-like radiation planning, improving treatment accuracy. Proud to see Liana Hayrapetyan, Aurelie Quintin, Lusine Hovhannisyan MD, PhD, Matus Medo, Rahel Riedo, Joachim Albers, Daniel M. Aebersold, and the rest of the team at Insel Gruppe Bern University Hospital and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany leveraging our IGRT SmART+ System to advance the frontiers of cancer care! If you missed the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) Annual meeting last week,?you missed an amazing presentation by Morreale Rachel, Manager of Applied Science and Technology for the Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD). Morreale Rachel presented updates to a successful pilot study to suppress populations of?Aedes aegypti?using the sterile insect technique (SIT) on Captiva Island, FL in September 2022. She went on to explain how they are now focusing SIT suppression efforts inland to Fort Myers, FL. Using a Precision X-Ray, Inc. X-Rad 320 irradiator, adult male mosquitos are sterilized and then released into the wild to mate with female mosquitoes, thus reducing the overall population and lessening the possibility of vector-borne diseases. The work conducted by Lee County Mosquito Control District using SIT emphasizes the potential for long-term sustainability. The program demonstrates how modern irradiation technology, combined with advanced entomological strategies, can effectively combat mosquito-borne diseases, offering a new frontier in mosquito control efforts. #SIT #PrecisionXray #LCMCD #NoMoreVectorBorneDiseases
