Did you hear the latest law that passed in California that affects nurses with Doctorates? You need to hear it. Read on...
?? California NPs with Doctorates – Read This Before Using "Doctor" in a Clinical Setting! ??What You Should Know in 2025 ?? New California law update! If you are a nurse practitioner in California with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or another doctoral degree, be very careful how you use the title "Doctor" or "Dr." in a clinical setting. As of January 1, 2025, SB 1451 (Ashby, 2024) made changes to Business and Professions Code (BPC) Section 2054 that impact the use of the terms: ?? "Doctor" ?? "Physician" ?? "Dr." (as a prefix) ?? "M.D." or "D.O." ?? What does this mean for NPs with doctoral degrees? ?? The law does NOT explicitly address doctorally-prepared NPs (DNPs), pharmacists, or other healthcare providers with doctoral degrees. However, it states that NO ONE may use these titles in a way that would lead a reasonable patient to believe they are an M.D. or D.O. ?? If you are an NP with a DNP (or other doctorate), be extremely cautious. The law does not clarify whether or how you may use "Doctor" in a healthcare setting, which means using it could put you at risk for legal scrutiny. ?? There is no specific allowance in this law for saying, "Dr. [Your Name], Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Nurse Practitioner." That language was not included in SB 1451. ?? Key Takeaways: ?? If you have a DNP (or another doctorate), carefully consider whether to use "Doctor" in patient care settings. Misuse could be interpreted as misleading under the new law. ?? When in doubt, clearly state your professional role first and avoid abbreviations that might cause confusion. ?? If you’re unsure, seek legal advice before using “Dr.” in any healthcare-related materials (business cards, signage, introductions, etc.). ?? Want to read the law yourself? Here’s the official source: SB 1451 Legislative Text ?? What do you think of this update? Drop your thoughts below! ??

California NPs: Major Updates to 103 NP Eligibility in 2025 – What You Need to Know! ??Big changes are coming for California Nurse Practitioners in 2025! ?? If you're an NP in California, you need to be aware of important updates to the 103 NP eligibility criteria that took effect on January 1, 2025. These changes, brought by SB 1451 (Ashby, 2024), impact how NPs qualify for independent practice under AB 890. Here’s what you need to know: ? More flexibility in transition to practice (TTP) hours – Your required TTP hours are no longer limited to clinical experience in just one category of NP practice. ? Attestor requirements updated – Your attestor is no longer required to be in the same specialty as you. ? Legacy and retired certifications now accepted – If you passed a national NP exam before January 1, 2017, but the exam has since been retired, it will now be recognized. ? Attestors only verify hours, not competency – The law clarifies that preceptors or supervisors who verify an NP’s transition to practice are not responsible for assessing clinical expertise—only confirming that the required hours have been completed. Key Reminders: ?? If you were previously denied 103 NP status due to these criteria, you must reapply through BreEZe. ?? Until officially certified as a 103 NP by the Board, NPs must still practice under standardized procedures. ?? Employers may still require standardized procedures, even for 103 NPs. What this means for you: If you’re working toward independent NP practice in California, this is great news—it makes the 103 NP process more accessible! If you applied in the last two years and were denied based on these old restrictions, it’s time to reapply. ?? For more details, visit the California Board of Registered Nursing website. ?? Are you planning to reapply? Drop your questions below! ?? #CaliforniaNPs #NursePractitioner #IndependentPractice #NPUpdates #HealthcarePolicy #NursingLegislation #AdvancedPracticeNursing #103NP #NursingCareer #NPLicensure #NursingRegulations #NPCommunity #NurseLife

California NPs: New Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for NPs in 2025 ?? Attention California NPs! Your CE requirements just changed—here’s what you need to know. As of January 1, 2025, Senate Bill 639 (Limon, 2024) introduced new continuing education (CE) requirements for NPs who provide primary care to older adults. ? If more than 25% of your patient population is 65 or older, you now need to complete: At least 6 of your 30 required CE hours in topics related to: - Gerontology - Special care needs of patients with dementia - Care of older patients Key Reminders: ?? All NPs still need 30 contact hours of CE every two years to renew their license. ?? These CE courses must be approved by a provider recognized by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). ?? Compliance with this new requirement will be confirmed during NP certificate renewal. ?? Why does this matter? With the growing aging population, geriatric-focused education is critical for providing high-quality primary care. These new requirements ensure that NPs who work with older adults stay updated on best practices in geriatric and dementia care. ?? Need CE courses to meet the new requirement? Visit the Board’s website for approved options. ?? What are your thoughts on this new requirement?? And, if you know a great CE that you want to share that meets these needs, please share below! ?? #NPEducation #ContinuingEducation #NPCE #GeriatricCare #Gerontology #AgingPopulation #NursePractitioners #PrimaryCareNP #NPRequirements #HealthcareUpdates #NPLife #NursingEducation #NurseLife #NursePractitioner #NPCommunity #HealthcareNews
