This phase explores scalable housing solutions to accommodate NYC’s growing population while ensuring sustainable densification. The design refines ecological water retention systems by reopening historic streams, mitigating floods, reducing temperatures, and enhancing pedestrian connectivity. By balancing hard and soft land use, the project creates resilient, accessible public spaces for both residents and newcomers. Thank you to all who joined us last night at the Center for Architecture for the 13th edition of Guess-A-Sketch, our signature architecture-themed sketching tournament that raises critical funds for our design education programs for children, families, and adults. ?? A special thank you to the eight teams who competed: DLR Group, Gensler, Lutron, RAMSA | Robert A.M. Stern Architects, STUDIOS Architecture, Turner Construction Company, runners-up Arup and champions TYLin! ?? On stage we were honored to have Matthew Bremer, AIA, NCARB, Architecture in Formation PC hosting as Master of Ceremonies while four architects sketched iconic buildings from around the world: Andy Bernheimer, FAIA, of Bernheimer Architecture; Brent Buck, AIA, NCARB, Brent Buck Architects; Wendy Evans Joseph, FAIA, STUDIO JOSEPH; and Stephen Slaughter, Pratt Institute School of Architecture. ?? The funds raised through Guess-A-Sketch are critical to keeping the Center for Architecture’s programs affordable and accessible to all New Yorkers. Saturday was a meaningful day at FXCollaborative, as we hosted more than 50 Brooklyn Technical High School students and 8 Pratt Institute School of Architecture M.Arch students for a design charrette focused on affordable housing at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) sites.?It was great to see the students' excitement and ideas around this important topic. Special thanks to FXCollaborative volunteers S. Feeling incredibly grateful to be featured by Pratt Institute in this article about my journey in architecture at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture and my efforts to create spaces that foster belonging. Architecture has always been about more than just design for me — it’s been about shaping environments where people feel seen, valued, and connected. I'm thankful for the opportunities I've had at Pratt, especially through NOMAS, AIAS, MSA and my work with Fig & Olive magazine, to explore how design can support diverse communities and engage in meaningful cultural exchanges. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey — professors, mentors, friends, and peers who have shaped my perspective and supported me along the way. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and was chair of the Department of Architecture (2002–2008). Her firm’s work includes libraries, museums, universities, workspaces, master planning, and residences. Mori has been a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences since 2016 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 2020, where she is currently vice president of architecture. As a member and former chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Design, Mori addresses scarcity-driven design, the future of cities and urban information systems, and the role of the arts in improving communities. This morning, I had the opportunity to present to about 35 MArch students at Pratt Institute, invited by?Kimberlae Saul, AIA and Carisima Koenig AIA. They asked me to share my experiences in starting and managing my own architecture firm. In preparing for the talk, I spent several evenings reflecting on the 22 years since taking that pivotal step in 2002. Along the way, many individuals have influenced, inspired, and supported me—mentors, colleagues, and of course, the clients, consultants, and builders who have collaborated on our work. From Sara and the HDG experience to Justin Brown, my first-ever hire, and the many others who have been part of this story, I am deeply appreciative. Thank you.
