Shannen Smiley is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation at the Pratt Institute’s Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies, with a minor in Art and Architectural History, from the University of Colorado Boulder. Since 2021, Shannen has been actively involved in the preservation field, holding roles at Village Preservation, the Tenement Museum, and the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation. All of these experiences, in tandem with her studies at the Pratt Institute, have provided her with a complex understanding of planning and preservation policy in New York City and beyond. Shannen’s interest in the Community Planning Fellowship is rooted in her passion for expanding the scope of preservation to include affordable housing, inclusive designations, and more diverse representations of heritage. She envisions a future where preservation plays a crucial role in both local and national planning discourse, ensuring the continuation of cultural histories and traditions that have been previously overlooked. Shannen looks forward to collaborating with local community boards to nurture and preserve valuable cultural histories in an ever-changing urban landscape. Calling all Broadway and theater lovers! Today’s 2024 Thesis Topic Share takes us off of Broadway (actually off off of Broadway), with Urvi Patel’s thesis entitled “Reviving the Stages: A Preservation Paradigm for NYC’s Off-Off-Broadway Theaters”. Urvi’s thesis focuses specifically on Off-Off-Broadway theaters that are a much loved and an essential aspect of New York City’s artistic landscape. “[if] Broadway theater is about commercial runs and Off-Broadway is about new voices and revivals, then Off-Off-Broadway is about avant-garde, experimental and non-traditional approach to the performance” (Nasrullah Mambrol) However, these theaters face numerous preservation challenges due to their unconventional nature and often limited financial resources. Therefore, her study explores the tangible and intangible preservation of Off-Off-Broadway theaters, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive preservation strategy that sustains this vibrant and culturally significant community. Urvi’s thesis offers different considerations for the preservation recommendation of the Off-Off Broadway theaters, whilst underscoring the critical role these theaters play in fostering artistic innovations and cultural diversity. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors necessary to sustain the off-off-broadway community, ensuring that it continues to thrive and contribute to the cultural fabric of New York City. All 2024 thesis projects are available at the Pratt library archives for any Off-Off-Broadway fans interested in reading more about Urvi’s thesis! Terrific job, Urvi!!!!
