Led by PrairieCare’s perinatal team, legislation to increase mental health care for pregnant and postpartum women was heard last Thursday in the Senate Commerce Committee. The new bill, which was approved unanimously, requires health plans to establish Maternal Mental Health Programs to increase screenings, align with HEDIS quality measures, train providers, and create a centralized referral network. This framework aims to streamline care, reduce provider burden, and help more mothers access the support they need. PrairieCare’s Sogand Ghassemi MD, FAPA, testified that maternal mental health disorders are the leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women. Speaking about this gap in care, a PrairieCare patient shared with Committee members how she struggled to find appropriate mental health care during her pregnancy until she finally found PrairieCare. The Committee also heard from Mary Troyer, who lost a postpartum daughter to suicide, and Sara Gangelhoff from the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota. The bill has now been referred to the Health and Human Services Committee for the next steps. A big shoutout to the influential contributions from our perinatal team, including Dr. Sogand Ghassemi, Lisa Cross, LMFT, PMH-C, Katie Fleuriet, LICSW, and Courtney Sailer, in organizing the Minnesota Maternal Mental Health Coalition, which included the following community partners: the Minnesota Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the MINNESOTA PSYCHIATRIC SOCIETY, the Minnesota Academy of Physician Associates (MAPA), Hennepin Health, Nystrom & Associates, Ltd., Postpartum Support International, the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA), and the Women's Foundation of Minnesota. #MaternalMentalHealth #Postpartum #Pregnancy #MentalHealthMatters #ThoughtLeadership
