At AIA California’s 2024 Awards Celebration, the Practice team won an Urban Design Award for our work on Hope Village. Among the exceptional projects produced across California, we’re honored to be recognized. The Awards Jury remarked, “This project embodies great design and urban connectivity with a needed set of programs.” Our team participated in a fulfilling series of events, including the architecture fair, where we connected with fellow firms and passionate students from Woodbury University. As event sponsors, we’re proud to help create spaces for our industry to connect and recognize work that will shape the future of California’s built environment. Last Friday, I witnessed another incredible evening celebrating Design Excellence at the AIA California Design Awards Ceremony at Woodbury University, Burbank. Seeing thoughtful organizations and individuals recognized for their ideas and their impact on communities and the environment made the event special. Congratulations to all. The event offered a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends from across California. It was filled with conversations, presentations, exhibits, and a career fair. The Architecture Department hosted a studio open house and was asked to mentor a few students by reviewing and redlining Architectural Wall sections. Thank you to the Dean of the School of Architecture, Heather Flood, for inviting us to contribute. The day was a perfect way to cap off another year as a Common App reviewer. Together with an exceptional group of professionals, guided by Katie Ackerly - David Baker Architects, and Ashley Taylor - AIA California, we review each project's sustainability criteria and assist Juries throughout the year. This year's group includes these awesome human beings: Hironaka Megumi - HED, Jonathan Feldman, FAIA, LEED AP - Feldman Architecture, Dave Intner - Southern Califonia Edison, Cary Bernstein FAIA - DB studio, Ben Welty - Feldman Architecture, Bill Burke, Gwen Fuertes - LMSa, Ruicong Cheng - Integral Group, Paul Poirier - Paul Poirier + Associates, Seth Dunn - Siegel & Strain, Hafsa Burt AIA, LEED Fellow, NCARB, ENV SP - HBA Architects, Erik Kolderup - Kolderup Consulting, Sing Tong, AIA, RIBA, LEED AP - RD Collaborative, Dan Johnson - Beyond Efficiency, Shannon Allison - Alter consulting engineers, Ali Rafieetari, Prateek Jain j - Atelier 10, Alexis Karolides - Point Energy Innovations, Rachelle Habchi - Glotman-Simpson, Porus Antia - Stantec, Amanda Knowles AIA - Siegel & Strain, Jonah Merris, AIA NCARB - Siegel & Strain, Polly Osborne - Osborne Architect, Nate Heckman, AIA - Resource Refocus. Our shared mission is to guide organizations toward more resource-conscious and human-centered solutions. The Common App is a great starting point for developing thoughtful, impactful design principles in the early design stages. To learn more or become reacquainted, explore the resources below. In addition to the incredible work he does here at Practice, our own Casey Castor is out there truly living his values through research and development of sustainable technologies. We're so proud and can't wait to see what's next, congrats!
Our team at Mack Research has just completed our Mobile Testing Trailer construction last week! Our first stop was the University of Southern California to give a demonstration and discussion to the MBS Building Science program where Casey Castor our Co-founder is an alumni. The presentation noted the importance of learning research methodoligies, cleantech market trends and grant funding. Lots of engaging questions from the students and wonderful rapport from the MBS faculty on our solution and work. Thanks to Kyle Konis, Ph.D, AIA, Karen Kensek, Douglas Noble, Ph.D., FAIA and Joon-Ho Choi for letting us come by USC and share with the MBS program! This project was developed and funded with Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) through their Incubation program. The trailer was custom designed over the last 6+ months and built by our in-house team over a short (34) day period. The mobile testing center has a telescoping mast system that raises our novel vertical wall wind leaf technology out of the roof of the trailer to take in real-time testing conditions. The trailer is equipped with a 4kwh battery and 400 watts of solar to support additional power production while testing in remote microclimates. As shown at USC, it has demonstration capabilities with an exterior facing monitor system connected back to a Raspberry Pi computer and a series of sensors showcasing the data collected in real-time. Our team is very excited to showcase our innovation through this pilot solution and provide local education to the LA region. It also allows our team to continue testing the design to promote increased leaf movements and energy generation capabilites of this cleantech solution! #uscarchitecture #cleantech #losangelescleantechincubator #buildingscience #windenergydemonstration #gotwind? #mackresearch #pilot

We are delighted to share the completion of the Los Lirios Apartments, a testament to our ongoing collaboration with the community in the dynamic neighborhood of Boyle Heights. This initiative, part of the METRO Joint Development Program and co-developed with East LA Community Corporation and BRIDGE Housing Corporation, introduces 50 units of transit-oriented, affordable family housing directly on top of the E Line Soto station. Together with the Cielito Lindo Phase 1 & 2 apartments across the street, we and ELACC have successfully delivered 109 essential affordable housing units at the intersection of 1st & Soto! #AffordableHousing #CommunityDevelopment

One of the goals for renovating the studio at @Practice (formerly GGA+) was to engage organizations and people in compelling conversation about the issues that face our City and region. Hosting last night’s discussion on Navigating Land Use Shifts and Adaptive Reuse in Pasadena was exactly that! With insights and compelling ideas from @Jennifer Paige-Saeki, Sr Planner at the @City of Pasadena, @Robert Montano, Dir. of Development at Adept Development, @Marie-Claude Fares, Dir. of Planning, Engineering and Architecture at @Caltech, and moderating by @Melissa Lee, CNU-A of @Public Works Partners, the exploration was wide ranging and inspirational.

Recognizing that materials have a significant impact on the health of people and our environment, we recently signed the AIA Materials Pledge. As part of our larger @AIA 2030 commitments, we constantly work to identify and use healthier materials. These choices matter, from improving the health of our projects’ end users and environment to supporting human rights and a circular economy. We’re proud to gather data on our projects to help inform this collective shift. Taking on the responsibility to support these efforts is a fundamental part of our work to strengthen our environment and communities. Being conscientious about the materials we use is one small step all of us in architecture and design can take toward creating a more sustainable future. We can’t wait to see the future impact of these transformations. "
