Positive Psychology is the science of what makes life worth living, and these five pioneers laid the foundation for a movement focused on human flourishing and well-being: William James – Often called the "father of American psychology," James introduced the idea that mental health should focus on building personal strengths and consciousness. His work laid the early groundwork for studying human potential and positive experiences. Abraham Maslow – Known for his Hierarchy of Needs, Maslow emphasized self-actualization—the idea that individuals have an innate desire to reach their full potential. His work shifted the focus from illness to the study of well-being and personal growth. Martin Seligman – Known as the father of Positive Psychology, he introduced the concept of "learned optimism" and the PERMA model of well-being, which emphasizes Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi – Famous for his research on “flow,” a state of deep engagement and enjoyment in activities. His work helped individuals understand how to achieve peak experiences in work and life. Christopher Peterson – Co-creator of the VIA Classification of Character Strengths, Peterson focused on positive traits like kindness, curiosity, and gratitude, shaping the study of what makes people and communities thrive.
