CarolinaPower continues to engage?today’s youth in an attempt to backfill an "estimated 500,000 shortage of skilled tradespeople nationwide." During January and February, Joey Jose, project manager in Charleston, dedicated time to helping local high schoolers learn real-world construction skills in preparation for the March 4th Build a SHED competition sponsored by ABC Carolinas Chapter. Tuesday, March 4th four schools, general contractors, and trade partners ‘hammered down’ to crank out a 6x6 playhouse/shed in just under seven hours during ABC of the Carolinas Build-A-SHED competition. ?After being mentored the last two months by the contractor coaches, six high school students from each team put their knowledge and skills to the test! ? Judging was based?on the criteria of structural completeness, safety, and technical elements. It was a tough competition with all teams having high scores in all areas but at the end of the day two teams were recognized for the top best scores. ? 2nd place- Lucy Beckham High School coached by Choate Construction Company & Tidewater 1st?place- James Island Charter High School coached by Miller Valentine and KELLER ? The winning team received a hammer trophy for their school and tool kits from Milwaukee Tools. All participating students received Milwaukee tool belts. ? The remaining participating schools, contractors, and trade partners: Baptist Hill High School – Frampton Construction and Light Gauge East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies – EDIFICE Construction and CarolinaPower ? In addition, Baker Roofing Company finished all four roofs.? ? The goal of this event is to promote a pipeline of workforce development and industry awareness to high school students. These high school juniors and seniors get hands-on training and an introduction to career opportunities within the construction industry from top notch construction professionals, some representing nationally recognized companies. ?
