Powtoon Behind the Scenes: How you do anything is how you do everything. I live by this rule, and for a good reason. If someone doesn't eat a burger without making a mess, I don't expect them to have a super neat apartment. In business, the little things tell the bigger story. -Are emails full of typos? -Is someone consistently late to meetings? -Do they deliver exactly what’s asked, or go beyond expectations? The way you show up in the small moments says everything about how you’ll handle the big ones. For me, this means being fully present: -Whether I’m brainstorming with my team -Having a one-on-one conversation -Or even responding to an email. When people see you care about the details, They trust you’ll handle the bigger picture. What’s one small habit that reflects how you approach the rest of your life? P.S. • Powtoon Behind the Scenes: Context over Control It’s afternoon on a Tuesday, and I’m reviewing an Excel file for the third time. The work is good, but it wasn’t what I had in mind. After another 2 rounds of changes, Just as I’m about to ask for yet another revision. I stop myself. Instead of sending it back, I apologize: “I’m sorry I didn’t give you enough context. Here’s what I’m trying to achieve.” I explain the bigger picture and share the purpose behind the request. An hour later, the team member comes back, Not with an updated Excel file, But with a fully functioning app that solves the core problems. It didn’t just meet my expectations, It exceeded them in ways I hadn’t even imagined. When you explain the "why" behind a task, The how and the what improve instantly. Getting better results matters, and you will end up getting them… But what matters even more is you'll be giving your teammates the ability to exercise their genius. You want that to happen? Give them enough context, They’ll be 10 x more equipped to achieve an exceptional outcome. P.S. Follow me at Ilya Spitalnik to add a business spark of awesomeness to your day, 1 post at a time. • Powtoon Behind the Scenes: Want to turn a crisis into an opportunity? Do the unexpected. A few years ago, our system went down during peak usage - 10,000s users stranded. It was every company’s worst nightmare. A moment where the weight of the problem feels crushing. The easy path was right there in front of us: -Blame a third-party vendor. -Hide behind generic emails. -Wait it out and hope people forget. But I couldn’t take that path. Instead, we faced it head-on. -We reached out to every single user: -Not with excuses -Not with PR fluff, -But with transparency. We said: “Yes, this is a major issue. And yes, it’s our responsibility.” And then we did something unexpected: We treated every frustrated email and call like a person, not a problem. Some users were furious. Some just needed updates. And some didn’t believe we cared. But we stayed human. We answered every concern with empathy, Explained every step we were taking, And kept the communication open until the system was back online. When the dust settled, something wonderful happened. Our users didn’t just come back, they stayed and endorsed the way we handled the situation. Not because we were perfect (we weren't) But because they saw us as real people who genuinely cared about making things right. That crisis didn’t break us, it made us stronger. The trust we built during those tough days became the foundation of our most loyal relationships. Challenges and crises are inevitable. What matters is how you respond. Will you hide, or will you step up and turn it into something greater? P.S. Follow me at Ilya Spitalnik for a business spark of awesomeness, 1 post at a time. P.P.S. • Powtoon Behind the Scenes: This is why communication is the make-or-break skill in business. You’re hearing a song in your head and tapping to it on the table, You're drumming it out perfectly. In your head, you hear the melody and the beat, But all the person next to you hears is a series of random knocks. They're unable to tell you which song this is because they don't hear the whole thing. That’s what I refer to as the Drummer’s Dilemma! A communication gap that happens all the time in business when people are speaking to each other. - You say one thing, expecting everyone to understand the full picture. - But what they hear is only a fraction of what you meant. - They don’t hear the full melody, only the isolated beats. This is why communication is the make-or-break skill in business. I’ve seen countless teams walk into meetings with the best intentions and walk out more confused than when they came in. Miscommunication kills projects, wastes time, and causes endless frustration. So how do you avoid the Drummer’s Dilemma? 1. Always give context. → Instead of asking for “a report,” explain what it’s for, who will use it, and why it matters. 2. Have a simple visual baseline → A picture tells a thousand words. Anchor everyone around the same visual understanding. 3. Verify the other side’s understanding → A simple “Can you tell me how you see it?” can save hours of wasted effort. 4. See where the other side is right → Everyone brings their own perspective and loves what they say. As a leader, your job is to ensure your team feels heard, And has enough context to be able to bring their own genius to the table. When you bridge that communication gap, Your team doesn’t just hear random knocks; they start playing the same piece of music in harmony. Please share any experiences of costly misunderstandings in business that could have been solved with better communication. P.S. • Powtoon Behind the Scenes: Every Super Strength Comes with a Super Weakness And that’s true for your colleagues, partners and also for yourself. ? The visionary CEO drives bold innovation, But may overlook the small details that keep the business running. ? The outgoing extrovert lights up the room, But might not always take the time to listen. ?The strategist sees ten steps ahead, But struggles to turn plans into action. ? The detail-oriented product manager ensures precision, But might lose sight of the bigger picture. What should you do about the super weakness? It’s tempting to “fix” it, But doing so only leads to frustration and wasted energy. Ask yourself: Is fixing this the best use of their talents? Instead, amplify what makes them exceptional. Support their weaknesses with the right systems—but only as much as necessary. Hire someone to do what they fail at, but let them shine in the thing that makes them unique. Foster the superpower, and you’ll unlock 10x performance (also for yourself). People are rarely aware of their super weaknesses and become very defensive when you point them out. So be kind when you speak to them... (I've made that mistake enough times for the both of us) P.S. Follow me at Ilya Spitalnik for a spark of business awesomeness, 1 post at a time. P.P.S.
