Sales & IoT solutions Engineer at WAGO Corporation

Control and Analyze VFD data with a CC-100 & Edge PC via Modbus RTU Oftentimes in industrial automation, you’ll find yourself dealing with multiple different devices from different manufacturers, all of which could speak various communication protocols. Two of the most common devices (at least for me) that you may come across are Programmable Logic Controllers and Variable Frequency Drives. The jobs of both devices are simple in name. For the VFD, set and run the motor based on speed, acceleration, deceleration, and start/stop (there are WAY more parameters on a VFD but these are the most common). For the PLC, create and implement a series of steps to control your process and execute. Use both of these devices together, and now you have a system that can be controlled dynamically based on a host of different factors. Additionally, you can have a single PLC communicate and control multiple drives at the same time for maximum processing control. Seeing as Wago doesn’t make VFD’s, I’ve teamed up with the folks at PowerTech Controls to demonstrate controlling and sending data from an Invertek Optidrive E3 VFD using a Wago CC100 compact controller. Combining the small form factor, horsepower, and open-source capability of the Wago Compact Controller with the granular motor control capabilities of the Intertek VFD, we were able to showcase a way to not only control the motion within our process, but also grab and send data related to that process to a database. With our Wago Edge PC as a database and visualization tool, we’re able to record the speeds, run statuses, and current draw of our systems. We can even set alarms, send emails, and analyze trends for future troubleshooting. If you’re interested in how this solution works and you’re in the Northeast USA contact PowerTech Controls.
