"The role of the principal must evolve in line with technological advancements, with a focus on leading change. Schools must actively learn about and adopt AI, rather than being passive recipients, and principals must be prepared to lead this change effectively. Principals are drivers of school success, and AI is yet another means for them to foster innovation in their schools by modeling a exploratory mindset for students and adults. For example, principals can cultivate spaces where teachers and students feel free to work with AI out in the open, sharing best practices and pitfalls for the benefit of other educators. What might principals and teachers accomplish by testing and leveraging computing power to elevate academic rigor, rather than banning tools that are already integrating in the professional world?" #AIinEducation #K12 #Principals

OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu announcement sparked quite a bit of discussion last week. It mainly set the stage for what institutions might expect to pay for AI access for students and faculty if they choose to work with an external AI provider. As a reminder, PowerNotes provides an alternative platform for students and faculty to use GPT4o, Anthropic Claude 3, and a growing list of other models. In fact, schools can use multiple AI providers and models simultaneously through PowerNotes, helping them navigate the uncertainty of this AI transition. Here are a few reasons to explore PowerNotes and our AI integration: ?? Access to GPT-4o and future OpenAI models for students and faculty at a fraction of the cost. ?? Flexibility to use models from multiple providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Amazon, Meta, and even your own in-house models. ?? User identity and content privacy protected by the API connection. ?? Access to valuable usage data and insights. ???? Academic integrity features specifically designed for academic research and writing. ???? A suite of non-AI features to help facilitate AI literacy within the research and writing process.

How will AI change education? "The use of AI in education has been a contentious topic. Critics argue that AI may facilitate cheating and undermine students’ learning abilities, which has led to it being banned in some schools. The New York Times, however, reported in December on research that claimed these concerns were overblown. The researchers concluded that cheating in schools has not risen with AI development. 'In surveys this year of more than 40 U.S. high schools, some 60 to 70 percent of students said they had recently engaged in cheating — about the same percent as in previous years,' The New York Times reported." ? With student cheating rates remaining largely the same almost 2 years since the release of ChatGPT, what barriers remain? #AIinEducation #K12 #Teachers #Librarians

?? ?? “'Demand for AI expertise is already high and will continue to grow,” Cantwell said in a statement. “This bill will open doors to AI for students at all levels, and upskill our workforce to drive American tech innovation, entrepreneurship and progress in solving the toughest global challenges.' The AI bill, which is called the NSF AI Education Act of 2024, calls on the National Science Foundation (NSF) to execute numerous programs bolstering U.S. expertise in AI and quantum computing, a technology that allows for problem solving on a time scale that would be unachievable using classical computers. The proposed programs include: ?? Awarding undergraduate and graduate scholarships in AI with a focus on the use of AI in agriculture, education and advanced manufacturing, as well as scholarships in quantum computing and programs that blend traditional and quantum computing. ?? Providing grants for research on the use of AI in agriculture. ?? Creating professional development fellowships for those working in STEM and education. ??? Establishing AI 'Centers of Excellence' at five or more community colleges nationwide for collaborating with educators to develop instructional materials for teaching students about AI. ?? Developing guidance and tools for students to use AI in K-12 classrooms. ?? Launching the 'NSF Grand Challenges' to devise a plan for educating at least 1 million workers in AI by 2028. Its goals includes supporting populations such as women and rural residents who are underrepresented in tech." #AIinEducation #HigherEd #K12 #Teachers

?? Google is fine-tuning its various generative AI technologies to meet the needs of educators, the company revealed at its Google I/O conference. 'Generative AI is fundamentally changing how we're approaching learning and education, enabling powerful new ways to support educators and learners,' wrote Ben Gomes, head of Learning & Education at Google, in a?blog post. 'It's taking curiosity and understanding to the next level — and we're just at the beginning of how it can help us reimagine learning.' To help educators do just that, Google is launching a new AI model for students called LearnLM. It is also bringing integration with its flagship Gemini AI model to Google Workspace for Education. #AIinEducation #highered #AIinnovation

"When using AI, it seems that the students scrupulously do their own editing and check to ensure that nothing wrong or weird is in it. They’re suspicious of any possible garbage the AI might include. They’re effectively also doing a teacher’s job on their own work before they submit it. There’s a much less obvious danger in this sort of work. AI is perfectly capable of introducing terminology and levels of information the students haven’t encountered and may not even understand. That shows instantly, and there’s no getting around it. Erratic variations between PhD and grade school levels of information are a bit conspicuous." #AIinEducation #teachers #highereducation ?? https://lnkd.in/gj8pkaa5

"In an all-student panel, philosophy and math concentrator Chinmay Deshpande ’24 compared the present moment to the advent of the internet, and how that revolutionary technology forced academic institutions to rethink how to test knowledge. 'Regardless of what we think AI will look like down the line, I think it’s clear it’s starting to have an impact that’s qualitatively similar to the impact of the internet,' Deshpande said. 'And thinking about pedagogy, we should think about AI along somewhat similar lines.'” #AIinEducation #highered #highereducation ?? ?? "When I ask students to integrate GPT into a work cycle, they have to jump back and forth between several windows: Canvas, where the AI prompts live; the Google doc, where they are copying AI text to revise and edit; and GPT. After 15 minutes of interacting with all these windows, my students genuinely look woozy. The mental exhaustion is real. All the toggling leaves them little cognitive room for the critical AI skills we need to foster. All this is a long way of saying that we need better AI tools if we are going to take AI use to a more critical place." Streamline your work with PowerNotes to reduce mental fatigue

?? Addressing the Flaws of Product-Oriented Education with AI ?? As we delve deeper into integrating AI in educational settings, the shortcomings of a product-oriented approach and high-stakes grading have come sharply into focus. It's time to rethink how we can transform educational practices: Key Challenges: High-Stakes Grading: Promotes a focus on outcomes over processes, encouraging shortcuts. Product-Oriented Education: Values final outputs over educational journeys, limiting creativity and engagement. Transformative Approach: Embrace Process-Oriented Education: Moving away from purely outcome-focused teaching to a process that emphasizes iterative learning and critical thinking. Rethink AI’s Role: Leverage AI to supplement rather than supplant the educational process, enhancing deep engagement with content. Quote from My Article: “In my own classroom, I've experimented with using AI at specific points in the writing process, but the question we must ask is: What value does AI add to the actual writing process? This exploration is not just about using technology; it's about enhancing the very pedagogy that guides our teaching.” Call to Action: I invite educators, policymakers, and educational enthusiasts to join this crucial conversation. How can we better integrate AI to enrich our educational practices? #EducationReform #AIinEducation #WritingPedagogy #ProcessOverProduct #CriticalThinking
