The looming surge in electricity demand—driven by AI data centers, electrification, and industrial expansion—is straining the U.S. power sector, industry leaders warned lawmakers in a House Energy Subcommittee hearing this week. A grid operator and power companies cautioned that new generation is not being added quickly enough to replace retiring coal and gas plants, raising concerns about reliability. A big concern is that interconnection queues may not reliably indicate how much capacity will actually come online to provide relief. At the hearing, PJM Interconnection reiterated projections that its summer peak demand could grow by 70 GW over the next 15 years. But industry leaders detailed several hurdles slowing expansion, including permitting delays, regulatory uncertainty, supply chain constraints, and challenges in building new natural gas infrastructure. Witnesses called for urgent federal action to address barriers slowing capacity additions. Lawmakers presented differing perspectives on how to meet rising electricity demand. Some emphasized the need for more baseload power, pointing to coal, gas, and nuclear as essential for reliability. Others focused on grid modernization, renewables, and demand-side solutions as the fastest, most cost-effective path forward. This week’s?U.S. House Energy Subcommittee hearing?underscored the growing challenges facing the U.S. power sector and the increasing pressure to address mounting?reliability concerns. Witnesses raised several good key points—but here are a handful. POWER’s story covering the hearing, substantially detailed, is linked below. -PJM projects summer peak demand is now set to grow by 70 GW over the next 15 years. -Interconnection queues aren’t a reliable measure of how much capacity will actually come online. -Permitting delays, supply chain constraints, and regulatory uncertainty are slowing new generation. -Lawmakers seem divided on the best path forward. https://lnkd.in/gtpQYuvW #PowerGrid #ElectricityDemand #EnergyPolicy #Infrastructure #Congress
